Default Another Track Day WITHOUT Cooling Issues

Did Buttonwillow raceway on Saturday. Not as hot as the track report a few weeks back, only reached about 85 air temp but I ran the car very competitively and experienced absolutely no issues. I really have to think the simple alteration of coolant/water mix and water wetter is making a big difference in how hard the car can run before running into issues.

Fastest time of the day came in the session below, a 1:57.44. The only car faster that day was an Ariel Atom running about 1:53, and an R8 V10 plus that was right about even with me. This particular session was cut short because my tires were starting to give out and I'd gone through another set of front pads.

Car performer exceptionally well. I can't believe I only got about 4 hours of track time out of the front set of pads. Rears still look like they're at 50% life.

I did run a 1/2 tank of 101 octane fuel mixed with a 1/2 tank of 91. Couldn't feel a difference on the butt dyno.

Even in the 25 minute sessions of the day, the highest oil temp I saw was 271.

4:48 starts the fastest lap

Track Conditions:
  • 85 Ambient Air Temps
  • Dusty
  • 15-25 min sessions

Vehicle Info:
  • Z07
  • M7
  • Forgeline wheels with Continental Slicks
  • 4,300 miles

Hot Track Prep:
  • 20% coolant and 80% water
  • WaterWetter
  • Removed weather strip at base of windshield
  • Factory Spec track alignment
  • RBF 600 Brake Fluid
  • No A/C running

Car Stats:
  • Max Oil temp 270
  • Max Trans Temp 241
  • Max Water Temp 230

Tadge stated that their design basis for trackable duty is 86 deg F. This seems to be consistent with their promise.

Great job sss and thanks for another great report. You mention tires starting to go, so how many track hours have you gotten out of the cup 2s and have all the hours been on track only? Best regards. DN

I'm not a C7Z guy yet, but most likely we will be some day soon, but I had a quick question about oil pressure: why does the C7Z not put out more oil pressure than it does? My C6Z will push 80psi when running it hard while fully warmed up. To date, I've never seen oil pressure get higher than the logs here in the OP's post, which going off of conventional old school wisdom seems low. I'm used to the rule of 10psi per 1000rpm's at a minimum, yet the C7Z doesn't seem to get near that ever.

Anyone know why this is?

I'm not sure what factory is. I've read 50/50 and 60/40. One small bottle (16 oz?) of water wetter

I've got to get a scale to answer that but there is a lot of carbon dust in the wheel. Hoping that's pad and not rotor.

The cup 2's last about 4 track days tops. After I burned through my first set I bought a set of forgelines and many sets of continental slicks to burn through. Those lasted me a lot longer than I expected, perhaps 4 hours. buttonwillow is a very smooth Tarmac so that certainly helped.

Not to be difficult, but you only ran 4 hot laps. Of course your temps were low.

Like I said, this was a very short session. The temps were no higher on a 25 minute session.

I think GM delivered on their "Track capable car" those who want to drive the **** out of it all day at the track should maybe upgrade their own cars, instead of wining and crying for someone else to do it for them. I'm somewhat surprised GM would warranty any car that's been on the track. The cars at spring mountain don't have warranty correct?

I don't think those frustrated that the car isn't living up to the marketing are wrong. If it's marketed as a "track capable" car, it should be that. If it was NA, it likely would have been, but they (GM) had to work within regulatory constraints. Consequently, we are left with a high caliber/quality automobile, that falls just short of perfect. That's something special in my book!

I agree that it's surprising how comfortable GM is with providing a warranty for a car that has seen the track. It's one of the reasons I came back to GM. They will stand by their performance products. They aren't always perfect, but they're working hard at continually improving.

I sold my '14 Mustang GT when they wouldn't fix a driveline vibration that happens at 87 mph. They asked me where I was able to drive @ 87 mph on the street, and I told them the track. It was then, they told me that they would pull the data off the system and if it looked like I tracked my car (road course or 1/4 mile) they would not warrant the drivetrain as they considered it to be "abuse". This will be the last time I buy a Ford unless they change their tune.

To be clear, I'm no GM/Chevy fan-boy, just an enthusiast who appreciates quality engineering in high performance cars. That being said, I've owned several GM vehicles ('69 GTO, '68 Skylark, '69 El Camino, '89 IROC Z28, '89 GMZ Sierra, '06 C6. etc.) and to date, they've been some of my favorites. I've also owned several imports which were also a blast to drive ('07 BMW Z4, '07 Subaru STi, '12 BMW X5, etc.). My favorites to date were, for very different reasons, the '69 GTO, '06 C6, the '07 STi, '12 BMW X5, and the '14 Mustang GT (once I fixed the suspension).

Bottom line: Kudos to GM for warranting this amazing car we all get to drive (hopefully I get mine in 2 days), but please add an external oil cooler or find a way to get more airmass through the cooling system!
