Default Pricing advice/questions on new Z

My car just arrived at the dealership and I was quoted 5k over MSRP by the dealer (we hadn't agreed to anything before since it's a 2016 and the pricing wasn't available at the time). It's a custom order that I specced and ordered through the dealer.

My question is if 5K over sticker is too high and if I should insist on bringing it down? Is it normal to pay over MSRP for a specced car?

This is my first experience buying a car in the US, please be nice!

Thanks

No way in he!! I would pay over MSRP.. I ordered mine and it will be here at the end of the month. I got mine for invoice. Only reason I got mine so cheap is because I'm a used car dealer and buy cars off this dealer all the time. I would say most people are getting them for MSRP. I would tell them MSRP or nothing. GOOD LUCK!!!

There are plenty of dealers on this forum that sell at MSRP. I wouldn't pay a penny over MSRP to these money hungry vultures!!

You really should have negotiated a price before waiting on the car. But no, MSRP is readily available on cars to order and wait for.

They are just taking advantage of you if you pay over MSRP. Ive already found a few dealers in Texas discounting 2016s also.

At least 5k under msrp. That should be fairly easy to do. Might have to make a few phone calls. MSRP at this point is crazy. They have a lot to work with. Also, availability should be absolutely no issue.

I agree - it's not first year anymore - MSRP should be max you pay for a 16

Were you informed that you were going to be charged 5K over? If so, did you agree to that? From what you say this was completely out of the blue.

Nope. Whenever I brought up price during the ordering process I was told nothing at all was available since 2016s had different pricing lists. Like I said this whole system is new to me; where I come from prices are set and we pay at retail price.

Thanks for the input so far everyone, seems that the general consensus here is that I should not pay over MSRP at all. Wish me luck!

If they are asking 5K over MSRP they are taking advantage of you. Don't play that game. There is enough markup on that car that 5K under MSRP is more like it.

Discounts are reduced now since GM raised the cost toi the dealer.

That may be the case but you do realize that the dealer makes a very hefty profit on a Z06. In fact it is one of the highest profit vehicles that GM makes. When a dealer charges MSRP they are stilling make a lot of money.

Ha instead of making 9-12k the only make 7-10.5k on them. The dealers are still making a huge profit even at 5-6k off msrp. Chicagoland z's are being discounted 3-5k. Deals are there keep searching OP.

Don't pay over MSRP. Walk away from the deal and order from one of the forum dealers. It won't take that long to get a new car delivered, maybe 2 months, if that.

There should also some 2016's on dealer lots right now for MSRP if you can live with whatever options the car comes with and not have to custom order it.

It's kinda looking like I will have to do this. I think ordering from the forum dealers in another state might be difficult. Will probably just look for another dealer in cali and negotiate this time before ordering.

Just say "Thank you" and walk away. Leave the property. They will most likely contact you in a day or two and ask where did they go wrong and how can we earn your business. Tell them 5k off msrp. They are still making about 6k. If they say no way then just say thank you and hang up. Shop dealers in your area if thats what you are comfortable with and someone will make a deal with you. Or better yet, use a Forum dealer and get a reasonable deal that way. It is not immediate gratifacation but you will save a lot of money. If money doesn't mean that much to you then pay 5k over and get your car today. Dealer is banking on this. Been in the car biz all my life so I have been there. Unless it is a rare car with very limited production no way would I ever let a customer walk making that kind of profit especially since you can get another unit fairly easy. If this is the only unit they are going to get I can understand them holding out. Then they are looking for a customer with no clue. There are few of those as well. Good luck!!!
