Guzzler Tax A8 but not M7?
Can anyone tell me how the government determines that a Z06 with a A8 gets charged a $1300 Guzzler tax but not the M7?

but 700 ponies with the Halltech the nice MPG is a bonus!
The M7 or A8 Z06 with the Halltech is fastest car on the road less very few
exotic's!

Well, pretty clearly it didn't get those numbers on the EPA drive loop.
I would guess on the drive loop the M7 returned just good enough mileage to escape the gas guzzler tax, but the A8 didn't.

Some of the earlier discussions on this indicated that when GM ran their numbers, the M7 just made the EPA number and the A8 just missed it. I think the total difference was about 0.3 MPG difference. There was about a 3-4 week hold on delivering the first A8's as GM hoped to avoid the GG tax, but was not able to.
The government doesn't generate the numbers for the cars, the manufacturers do. The government just sets the standards.

It's all about gearing
The A8 has much lower gears than the M7 throughout the range. The M7 can get over 60 in first but the A8 needs a shift. Lower gears means higher RPM and faster dig times but lower mileage.

very simple, its the average MPG rating. 18 MPG average is the cut off for no gas guzzler tax. 17 mpg average it starts at $1300. The M7 gets better average MPG. Average being not city or highway mileage.

Thanks, It just seemed odd that the same car same engine but different transmission would get different ratings but logic never is used when it comes to taxing or regulations.

This topic has been discussed several thousand times. Was this the best new topic you could come up with, or is "search" not a familiar term?

The M7 can average 25 mpg with ease. It is underrated and gets even 28 at times and that is not in eco mode. Eco mode can pull 30 mpg at times. Better MPG than the A8 can do! I don't buy it for MPG

I have both the 2015 C7 Stingray and the 2015 Z06/07. The Stingray's best mileage with the A8, is 29.4 mpg. The Z06's best mileage is right around 26 mpg with the M7.
The Stingray has just over 6k for mileage, and the Z06 is just over 4k. I don't feel that the A8 should experience a gas guzzler tax since combined with the Active Engine Management system, the A8 does very well on fuel economy.
I drove the Stingray (A8) from central Florida to New England and back over the 4th of July holiday, and averaged 28.5 mpg over 3007 miles. Not bad in my book!

I see an irony here......... some folks say oh I want that A8 it is faster then the M7 and I guess it is. So they plop down an extra $1300 to the gooberment and then I wonder how often they benefit from the .X second to justify the $1300?
Buy the A8 because you prefer it not because it is faster where most of us will never see that aspect in our daily drives.

A typical A8 is .3 quicker in the 1/4 mile v/s the M7, well worth the 1300 gas guzzler tax for performance knowledgeable people(most corvette people)
Or just wait and buy slightly used A8, no gas guzzlers tax.

It's not just the $1300 gas guzzler tax, the A8 also costs more...the total cost for the A8 is more like $2,800. I'll stick to my dinosaur, the three pedal manual transmission.

Then when you with your A8 meet a well driven M7 is a roll race and lose then you can talk about how much more faster it is!

My dealer told me that the reason behind the manual shift getting away without the gas tax is because it gives the driver a economy message to shift directly from first gear to fourth gear during certain parameters...as a matter of fact in the owner's manual it states that unless this procedure is followed when the message is displayed the transmission could be damaged...I think that warning is also part of the program and in reality damage will not occur...

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but here in Clark County, Washington (within the Vancouver city limits), the Sales Tax is 8.4%. On vehicles, they cleverly call it a Use Tax and increase it to 8.7%. You pay that on the net cost of a vehicle, minus a trade-in if applicable.
When registering our new 2015 A8 Z06 in June, the Gas Guzzler Tax was not a surprise but having to pay a Use Tax on the included Gas Guzzler Tax was not expected.
Told the Department of Licensing person that this amounted to a tax on a tax. They said they calculate the Use Tax based on the net cost on the invoice. End of subject.
Had to file paperwork with the Washington State Department of Revenue in Olympia. Finally received a $113 check for the over-payment.
