Default What to do if dropped 10mm wrench between LT4 and firewall?

Well. This time it's a wrench, not a bolt.

I used a fiber optic scope to look for said wrench. No joy.

Last time I put the car up, and the missing bolt rolled, dropped on the ground. That is not working with the wrench. I have started the engine since losing this wrench and no problems.

Suggestions?

I'm worried it could interfere or get dislodged at the wrong time. Since I have no idea where it is.....looking for advice

Start snaking a telescoping magnetic pick up tool down there. It's bound to be somewhere if it didn't hit the floor.

Okay thanks. Will try.

Pretty sure of the tool you suggest, but
Do they make those with a snaking arm.....not telescoping?

I'm not sure. I have a few different ones and they telescope out with different size/strength magnets on them. Good luck.

Tie or tape a good strong magnet to anything flexible even a piece of string. There shouldn't be too much down there a magnet will stick to besides your wrench. Use your phone camera to take pics back there. You might be able to spot it.

Put magnet on end of one of those flexible pickup tools with the three prongs activated by pushing a button on the handle end........

Good idea. I have a tether for the phone just in case......wouldn't want to lose it as well.....

Thanks all

I lost a wrench in mine once. Got very frustrated that I couldn't find it -- stepped away for a few hours and spotted it instantly when I came back. Pure luck, but it's not the first time that has happened to me or other people I know.

Best of luck!

You can get a borescope camera that will work with a laptop or phone to look around as well. They're pretty cheap now and are a great help looking around in spots that are hidden. You can find them for less than 30 bucks.

This is the one I had to use recently for a very similar issue.
It worked fairly well but it isnt telescopic it just holds whatever shape you bend it to.

Good luck

The problem with driving is that you'll never know if it falls out. Then, you'll be forever wondering if it's still on the car!!!

I was adjusting valve shims on my motorcycle with a very small open end wrench and it fell into one of the oil passages. Very small opening only possible solution was to turn the motorcycle upside down. Didn't do that, took the bike to Vance and Hines to build the engine and said "Oh by the way after you get the motor off the bike please turn it over and get my wrench" They did that and I got my wrench and a very very fast motorcycle

what would really SUCK would be to dislodge it while driving....and drive over it and maybe stuff it in a tire...YMMV.

With something that long and where it is located between the wheels that possibility is extremely unlikely. Either it won't go near a tire or if it does it will be knocked flat by the tire and run over with no damage to the tire.

Spot on. I was looking to far down while scoping with the fiber optic device. Stuffing rags in there for a block, next time.....

It was right about here: Even though the magnet grabbed it good, was still hard to get out. Next time won't take so long.....
