Race Helmet Availability
This is a revised post.
I ordered a Bell helmet from the JEGS website because they didn't have a "Backordered" note on their website. So today I got an email from them that says they will ship it in July. WTF!
After researching this issue I have answers. Apparently the manufacturing of a couple of brands of helmets was seriously delayed by changes of producers in foreign countries. That's an interesting problem from a business/production/finance perspective. Nevertheless it has caused some real issues within the race industry.
I called SCCA to try to get to the bottom of this and was quickly helped by their Safety Representative. I learned they (and I suppose other certifying authorities) have a temporary rules change that states helmet SA dates will extended for a period of one year. The exact wording can be found in the 2016 SCCA General Rules, p. GCR - 91, last paragraph. It states:
"Crash helmets approved by the Snell Foundation with Snell
sticker 2005 or later Special Application SA2005 (SA2005 will no longer be accepted as of 1/1/2017), SA2010/SAH2010, or SA2015/SAH2015, or by the SFI with a SFI Sticker SFI 31.1, or by the FIA standard 8860-2004 or later, or British Standards Institute BS6658-85 type A/FR. Each driver’s helmet shall be labeled with a minimum of the driver’s name. The use of a head and neck restraint system that has been certified in accordance with SFI 38.1, FIA 8858-2002 or 8858-2010 is required; an SFI 38.1 or FIA 8858-2002 or 8858-2010 label must be properly affixed to the device."

If you have a SA2010 helmet you're safe and if you have a SA2005 helmet you've been exempted for one year. That saves enough money for one more track event this year.

The only open faced helmet I bought was back in the late 1960's.

Most Simpson sa2015 helmets are out. Or pay half price for a sa2010 and throw it away in 5 years when sa2020 comes out and buy a new sa2015 for half price. Rinse and repeat.
