Default Drag Radial and Wheel Combo - Z07

Hi everyone,

I know it's been done before - but people's choices are evolving - so I thought I'd ask again.

Background;

I have a 2015 Z07 with approximately 720 WHP (it's being dyno'd either tomorrow or Monday).

I bought MT ET Street S/S DR's as I understand they are the only DR offered in the 20" OEM wheel size (335-25).

There's been feedback from you can't make a lane change with ET Streets to they are okay for the street - limited to no feedback for how they do at the track. The 25 profile is obviously not helping a limited sidewall.

So I've decided to see what the best aftermarket wheel/DR combo is with the Z07 brakes to not waste time if my testing proves they stink for either street or track.

Any feedback from the drag racers who have tested are welcome - as well as anyone's personal experience.

Thanks everyone!

I will ask another question - for diameter to remain near stock what wheel size is recommended for the Z07 brake setup?

I checked into this for my Z07 car. 18" diameter wheels that would clear the CCB's are VERY expensive. I went with NorCals 19" Z06 reproduction wheels and Nitto NT05-R tires in 345/30-19 sizes. They're much better than the stock tires for straight line traction, but I haven't been able to do better than a 1.74 60' at the strip. They are pretty stable, not seeing the terrible swaying some have reported with the new MT SS tires, but handling is definitely worse than with stock tires.

A mixed bag, but there it is.

Thanks 6Speeder! So for the 19" solution you are using - 1.74 60 foot is your best; is that with a burn out? What PSI have you tried so far?

Do you run this setup daily? What mods do you have?

I haven't yet tried the ET Streets yet for myself. I will mount them first and see for myself how unstable and sketchy they are (if at all) - as well as some limited prep test and tune days at the drags. I am sure they are not as drivable as the Sport Cup 2's lol - but as long as they are decent - I will be happy.

Cheers and thanks again for your info!

My best was with a burnout and at 16 PSI. Higher pressure didn't work as well for me.

I'm at 525 rwhp/555 rwtq, because of the DA here. It was 6,500 for those passes.

Thanks again - have you dailied these at all? Or do you run around on stock wheel size rubber for the streets?

It will interesting to see how the 20" DR's run - on the street and track - I'm hoping it's good at - at least one lol...

I have done a couple dozen 18x12 or 12.5 Forgleines that weigh just 19lbs and can send it complete with the Mt345 or Hoosier 335. Just hit me up. I've got a set in stock with 18x6 and 18x12.5s with the MTs.

I'm in the same boat as you (MT ET SS 20s) and with the anchor of spare factory wheels in my lap.

If I had it to do over again, here's what I'd do. I'd make my priorities:

- Safe handling
- Factory appearance
- Great traction

I had those reversed.

Given that, I would then find what I thought was a good drag radial and work backwards - how do I get THAT tire on my car, rather than what fits my car.

I know I've had good Nitto and BFG setups, so let's say it turns out the 18" Nitto 555 has a great reputation. Then I'd try to find a stock looking wheel that fits it!

I ran them for a couple days. Typical drag radial feel, they aren't gonna throw you off the road, but the feel you get with a good working suspension/tires was gone. Kinda wiggly.

I have this setup from weapon x with the Hoosiers they dead hook on the track and grip well on the street with no strange problems, just don't drive in the rain.

Thanks - I will see how I feel with the tire/wheel combo with the MT's first. If it's terrible - I will look into your suggestion...

Thanks Dave - I don't know much about you or your setup - I have read a few of your posts on the Z07 suspension. It seems there are more than a few opinions. I have some local folks who swear by them - I have some that say you can't make a lane change without losing control (I'm not sure if that was you).

I already have the setup - so I'm going to test them out.

I am used to high powered cars (my last was 1900 HP) - and I drove it on DR's without too much of an issue. That said - the DR's I had were not on 20" wheels and didn't have a 25 profile lol.

So we will see. If it fails - I will do as you suggested - find the best tire and match a wheel to it.

I am scheduled to get the car back this week depending on how testing goes (dyno is on Tuesday or Wednesday latest). I hope to have it this weekend and depending on the weather - on the road to test.

Of course it's not a problem at all. I can do X11 fronts and x13 rears with R7s or R888s. Do you have steel brakes or carbon? I actually have 4 sets of Forgelines for steel brake cars at a ridiculously low price. PM me

I am running 19x12 Factory Reproduction wheels with Mickey Thompson 325/30R19 SS drag radials. They dead hook with a little burnout. I'm running consistent 1.6 60 foot times.

^^^ This is great information - how do they drive on the street? Are these wheels a solid/forged construction? Does the 30 profile feel like there is sufficient side wall?

It feels a little soft in the rear (just like every other car I have owned with drag radials). When I first left the tire shop they had the pressure really high and the car would get squirrely around 80mph. Once I lowered the pressure it felt perfectly stable. I run 30psi on the street and 20psi at the drag strip. One side benefit is that the Mickeys have less road noise than my factory tires.

I've been 1.4Xs on my 18" setup. 19s with repros look nice and factory but there is no substitute for sidewall

I'm not just pedaling wheels here lol, I'm also an avid racer.
