Incorrect. The C3 was great seller even it it's last years of production.....

1975------38,465(8th year of the C3 production)
1976------46,558
1977------49,213
1978------40,274
1979------53,807
1980------40,614
1981------40,606
1982------25,407

So, what happened in the VERY LAST year of the C3; 1982?

Everyone knew that GM was coming out with a brand new Corvette for 1983, so many people who would have purchased a 1982, held off to see what the new 1983 Corvette would be .

Of course, we all know that GM ran into problems with the 1983 Corvette, and production was delayed until the 1984 model year.

At NO time did GM ever consider dropping the Corvette during the C3 run.

The first year of the C4 sold well, but part of it was due to a skip in the Corvette production in 1983 and the resulting pent up demand plus a brand new from the ground up Corvette.

1984----51,547
1985----39,729
1986----35,109
1987----30,632
1988----22,789
1989----26,412
1990----23,640
1991----20,639
1992----20,479

By 1992, the continuing sales slump of the C4 was very evident, and GM WAS planning on dropping the Corvette.

Except for one year, the 1984, the C4 sold nowhere as well as the remaining years of the C3(except of 1982 which was still better than the 1988 C4 sales and all C4 sales after 1989).

The C5 saved the Corvette, not the C4. The C4 was responsible for nearly killing off the Corvette.

The annual sales of the C4, or the C5, or the C6 or the C7 has not been better than the last years of the C3(except for the VERY LAST YEAR OF THE C3's PRODUCTION).

PS-In 1982 I was driving a 1969 C3(I never liked the plastic bumper C3's but a ton of people did, or the terrible horspower) and I knew all about the NEW Corvette that was in the works. I was one of those that didn't consider buying a 1982 and I waited for the C4 to be released. As soon as my local dealer got one, I was there, with my checkbook. I wasn't impressed, so I skipped the C4 generation and the next Corvette I purchased was a 1998 C5(in 1997). Now that was a car I was impressed with.

Default C8 Mid engine

I don't think corvette will go mid engine, unless they make two models. Carry on with the C7 platform because they have not kept it in production long enough to pay for all the engineering and production costs yet in the 4 years. The C7 is obtainable for most corvette enthusiasts and a mid engine version for the people with more money. Because to create this I feel base price is going to be $100k to 140k. Similar to the Ford GT when it came out 12 years ago. And they went up in value 2x the MSRP now. New ford GT 600k. It would be great if Chevrolet could do a car that would gain value over time. C4, C5 and C6 just keep dropping. Look at your average 2001 Z06 in value 30% of its original MSRP of 50k. So an exotic mid engine design from chevrolet will have a hefty sticker price. I just feel they would have to make 2 models.

That's my 2 cents. Wade

With the big expansion at the Corvette plant something coming. They are going to built two different cars at that plant. What will they be? Only GM knows.

Now if they do build a Mid Engine Corvette Super Car don't over produce it. Build 500 cars a year. That will keep demand high along with the price. The next problem is your dealer network. Which dealers do you let sell the car and how much will they have to pay in tools and training to sell and service it?

Does GM only build this car for a couple of years and than stop production? Ford did it with the GT and Lexus only built the LFA in 2012 500 cars.

I definitely agree, no all new cars for me.

Let the manufacturer sort out the bugs for at least a couple years first, by then lots of good improvements and tweaks, and bugs shaken out.

Two Corvette models at the same time? Is the market big enough? Is the plant big enough? Is there enough capital? Engineering resources?

Michael

The C9 + C10 will probably be electric and driverless the way things are going
