Default 2004 Gas Tank Leaks!

From an Ohio Dealer

Hey all !!

Had a few 04's in the shop lately with some fuel tank leak issues. This is a very expensive repair. GM just stepped up to the plate and is going to fix them for the customers. Finally. Just an FYI for you guys and gals. Here's the letter just released on Friday.

#10150: Special Coverage Adjustment-Fuel Tank Quick Connector Leak - (Aug 13, 2010)

Subject:10150 - Special Coverage Adjustment - Fuel Tank Quick Connector Leak

Models:2004 Cadillac XLR
2004 Chevrolet Corvette

<A href="http://gsi.xw.gm.com/si/showDoc.do?docSyskey=2519705&releaseDate =2010-08-13&name=Special+Coverage+Adjustment-Fuel+Tank+Quick+Connector+Leak&from=ns&b ulletinNbr =10150#ss1-2519705">Condition

Some 2004 model year Cadillac XLR and Chevrolet Corvette vehicles may have a fuel tank leak at the quick connectors that are used to link the left and right fuel tanks. The customer may notice a fuel odor while the vehicle is being refueled, driven, or after it is parked. If the leak becomes large enough, a small amount of fuel may be observed dripping on the ground. The leak may also result in a diagnostic code being set and the illumination of the Check Engine light on the instrument cluster.

This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.
Dealers are to replace the leaking fuel tank. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.
For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after August 16, 2010, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to August 16, 2010, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.

- Original paid receipt confirming the amount of unreimbursed repair expense(s) (including Service Contract deductibles), a description of the repair, and the person or entity performing the repair.

August 2010 Dear General Motors Customer:
As the owner of a 2004 Cadillac XLR or Chevrolet Corvette, your satisfaction with our product is very important to us.
This letter is intended to make you aware that some 2004 Cadillac XLR and Chevrolet Corvette vehicles may have a fuel tank leak at the quick connectors that are used to link the left and right fuel tanks.
Do not take your vehicle to your GM dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.
What We Have Done: General Motors is providing owners with additional protection for the fuel tank connectors. If this condition occurs on your 2004 model year Cadillac XLR or Chevrolet Corvette vehicle within 10 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 100,000 miles (160,000 km), whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge. Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the condition described above is not covered under this special coverage program.
What You Should Do: Repairs and adjustments qualifying under this special coverage must be performed by a General Motors dealer. You may want to contact your GM dealer to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will also allow your dealer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your other important glove box literature for future reference.
Reimbursement: The enclosed form explains what reimbursement is available and how to request reimbursement if you have paid for repairs for the special coverage condition. Your request for reimbursement, including the information and documents mentioned on the enclosed form, must be received by GM by August 31, 2011.

WOW. AWESOME INFO. THANKS.

Mine falls in that serial # range but I haven't had a problem yet. I may see if they'll do it regardless. It's work and money for them so you never know.

Did they change the tank setup after the highest VIN referenced?

Looks like I'm outside the VIN range with 45129999 so my tank must be good.

Thank you for this info, my 2004 has been smelling like an open gas can for about a week now, and just yesterday I finally saw some (small amount) of gas dripping from the bottom of the car near the driver rear wheel. I called a local dealer who claims never to have seen this tech doc. I've printed it out and will go in person to see if they wil handle this as the letter suggests. If GM is really admitting this and willing to correct it that will save me $2000 that I really can't afford to spend right now. Thank you!!!

Thank you for the post 2004c5! Amazingly I got a letter from GM advising me of the issue and directing me to the dealer. Funny thing is after I dropped off the car I got a call from the "service advisor" later in the day and he said that the letter only authorizes the replacemnt of the "tank couplers" he didnt know I had seen the whole text of the letter that stipulates that the "tank or tanks" will be replaced too if they are leaking. He went on to say that since one of the tanks is indeed leaking that they are going to be "nice" and that I was "lucky" and they will replace the tank at no charge. When does any dealer do work for free? If it wasnt covered I'd be paying for the repair. He went on to say since the car was in thier shop and since they were doing me a "favor" by repalcing the gas tank (for free) they had also detected a vibration in my water pump, and that the bearing is going and I should have them replace the pump while the car is there. The pump may "blow up" and strand me. His words! : ) They were willing to replace the pump for a mere $890.00. Actually I'm sure the pump may need to be repalced proactively but I can get a new one for $159.00 and I've done this repair before. I'd like to say that most dealers are mostly reputable but after that phone call I'd be leary of ever taking a car there again for repair. I'm not afraid the ASE mechanics will do a shoddy job but coercing customers into extra expensive repairs is rotten.
