IMporting from US- NEW RULES?
Anyone import a vehicle from the US recently ( say last 3 months) and have any experience with US border services new rules. When I imported mine two years ago it was a breeze.........
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/loc...258064351.html
In particular this requirement from a potential US seller:
"....
A potential problem is that to complete the AES filing, the U.S. seller is required to have a federal tax identification number called an EIN. Private individuals in the U.S. might not have an EIN number but, under the new rule, the American seller will have to get one to comply with the AES filing.
That means taking the time to apply to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, and some private sellers don't want to do that.
"What we're telling our customers is find out if the seller has or will get an EIN number. If the seller won't, don't buy or get your money back," Franzmann said
....."
I was considering a vehicle import but when I mentioned this EIN number requirment to the seller they talked to their beancounter and were advised NOT to get it. Thanks for any feedback.

PM if youd like more info. Its fairly easy if you know what to you. Just need a broker who knows that they're doing. Don't attempt to do yourself, its fairly involved and not worth it. You'll need buyers tax id, address, etc ,etc. If bringing car over yourself you'll need all that info and how you paid for it. If having someone else bring it over you need all their info./

Not looking likely. You used to be able to come across Canadian side without doing the 72 hour thing and they usually didn't care. Now they go over all paperwork with fine tooth comb on BOTH sides of border before letting you import car. Its a big hassle, but looks like $50, which in the long run is pretty insignificant.

This is good for Canadian side, but you also have to do the USA part of things before entering Canada. Also when in Canada have to make sure vehicle conforms to all Canadian standards like daytime running lights etc.

That's how it WAS and there are NO duties. I did it once and it was a breeze.
The running light stuff was a joke. Yes you needed it but when I went to Canadian Tire they were more interested in how nice the car looked. I just had the lites set to "on" and they passed.....lol

By duties, I meant HST. I cannot speak to importing to the US but, as far as importing cars to Canada goes, people are making this process FAR to difficult. I have brought several over, most on weekends and I can have a vehicle on the road by the end of the business day Monday.

Please do not follow that terrible advice. Usa offices are not open on weekend. If you do not stop and get everything stamped on the USA side, you risk fines and seizure and also risk the U.S. side denying any exports from you in the future. What used to happen before the laws officially came into effect last month isn't valid anymore. I've seen US customs agents chase down truck with trailer before they could cross and it wasn't good for them. Also unless you get extremely lucky the canadian side will not allow import without USA side stamp and approval.
