OK, I'm ready to buy a car stateside again.

A quick review of the RIV process shows that the United States Customs have an added twist. The seller must provide a copy of AES - automated export system ; EEI - electronic export information.

This is a document for the IRS of the sale of the vehicle. I can see the US dealerships complying, but suspect the individual private seller will balk at the process.

Has anyone gone through this process yet? Any details would be greatly appreciated. Was your purchase private or through a dealership?

As a side note: My last purchase was driven back to Canada by myself, not through a broker; and I would expect to go that route again.

mutliple threads will yield us an answer! I tried buying a US car from a private individual in the last month and after I brought up the issue of them needing an EIN number they refused....... so much for that deal. Has anyone done an import lately.........
