My 2000 CRV with 138k on it burned a valve which is apparently common for these. Dealer says over $2000 to fix it and given the rough body on it, I consider it to be a no more than a $2000 car.
I was only going to run it another year and dump it for $1000-$1500 and I probably need to put new rubber on it and maybe do the belts.
Also has a valve cover leak and a pan leak but not hitting the ground yet.

I might find a backyard guy who can do the fix for closer to $1k and drive belts for another $200 but...

Would you fix and sell it or just dump it? How much can you get for a rolling unit with a burnt valve? Has a remote start and new brakes but a bad motor. To me the only way the car has any value at all is without the valve issue so its drop $1000 on it and sell for $1500-$2000 (no belts and tires) or sell it damaged and get $200-$300 back. Is the choice pretty clear? Its kind of like putting an old dog down.

BTW no scenario where I keep it long term. For all the Honda rep this car and my previous Element beater were not cheap cars to own after 100k

Spring is a long way off - so fixing it to drive now would be good for you.
Then hopefully you will get all your money back - when you sell it in the Spring.

Buy another of the same model and keep the decent parts and tow the rest of it to a scrap yard for scrap value. 2-300?

I would think those cars would be fairly straightforward to work on ... any possibility of doing it yourself, or at least taking it apart yourself and having a machine shop replace the valves?

Other than that, as Dodo said, keep it for parts if you have the room and an understanding spouse. Even if not for yourself, if you're a patient person you could probably get a fair bit back by selling the more valuable stuff on kijiji.

Kijiji for an engine, get the winter out of it then move on. Always a market for a Honda.

Thanks for the responses guys. I opted to sell as is and step up to a used premium car for a commuter. If I could have done the work for less, or the body was in better shape I would definitely have fixed it but I have no connections for Honda repair work and I don't trust my back yard guy for anything more than brakes.

I feel your pain. Honda and Toyota parts can be VERY expensive, it's the reason I got rid of my old winter/work car ('98 Rav 4.) The parts were insanely expensive, even online and aftermarket parts. Everytime I hear people knocking American car and praising "imports" I remember how much everything cost when I had to fix things. At least with Chevy, like Jay Leno says, "you can fix it with a hammer"!

Sorry, not much help, don't know what I would do in your shoes, just commiserating with you.

i would agree that pats are more expensive, no matter after market or dealer, but, Japanese cars only break half as often. it all works out in the wash, or rice bowl.

It's too bad you live 2.5hrs away from me, could have maybe come up with something. Also, if you ever have/need advice on the LS1 in your Vette (assuming it's the one in your Avatar) shoot me a PM. I've owned my 1999 Camaro SS for almost 15 years and have installed heads/2 cams (on different occasions, lol)/double roller timing chain/Jesel shaft rockers/electric water pump/LS6 valley cover/Intakes/Headers x2 and much more (clutch, flywheel, suspension, and brakes).

$2000 !!! this Honda Dealer is fcuked !!! sorry to say that... , but for under $2000 u can get a whole JDM Engine and transmission for that car with probably around 40-60Km on it

i drive a 1997 Honda Prelude , and in 2009 at 150K my transmission went (mostly due to my heavy driving ; ) of the car and poor tip tronic design for that model) and i was also due for timing belt change and needed new tires . rather then rebuiding the transmission and getting a timing belt done , my mechanic ( friend of family) got me a a complete engine and transmission OEM JDM swap from japan with 45K on it and new tires for $3000 , still driving the car as a daily driver to this day with out any problems

if the body of the CRV is in good shape i get it fixed or swap
i heard of people driving these cars until 350K

Yeah. I was looking for a G37 but couldn't make my deal. The Lex was kind of "2nd prize" but I am really enjoying it. Super tight car at 120k and surprisingly quick.
