Default Personalized plates... prices increased on Jan 1

I've been trying to decide on a personalized plate for a while now. I went to the site today to try out a few more and discovered the price has increased to $310!!!

WOW, that's crazy I didn't pay anywhere close to that for mine, mind you it's been a while since then.

I guess that's what happens when the Ontario gov't gives up ownership of the licencing offices and allows them to go private...they charge what they want. PROFIT HOGS!

Thank goodness the drivers' licences and valtags are still gov't. regulated; not that I'm praising the amounts that they charge us.

Crooks!

The quality of the plates has gone downhill, every other plate you see is peeling.

Yes. the cons had to take cut in pay to keep the prisons going, so quality goes down, sign of the times.

But at least you only pay the crooks once - then own it for life.
Which is a good deal - as long as the plate is not specific to your current ride.

The plates on my wife's car fell apart last summer.Had to replace them at my cost of course. My C6 personalized plates are starting to come apart, the front one which has a clear protector cover on it. Looked at several plates in the parking lot of the local mall when I was picking up a few groceries & noticed a lot of plates coming apart. I guess the government isn't big on quality inspections of outside vendors/contractors.

I bought my first personalized plate (CYA NOW) back in 1987 and I think it was $75 then! I got my current plate, PATMN, in 1997 and I think it was still under $100.

As far as I'M concerned, and I have personalized plates on both my vehicles, when they break down I WILL NOT put out more money to replace them, but will go back to the cheap non-personalized instead.

From what I understand (check the MTO website) you only pay a partial replacement cost for damaged plates. My wife's non personalized plate replacement was around $20

Replacing Plates, Permits or Validation Stickers Cost
Regular Licence Plate Replacement $29.00*
Graphic Plate Replacement $53.90*
Personalized Plate Replacement $99.10*
Personalized Graphic Plate Replacement $99.10*
Replacing your Validation Sticker $7.00
Replacing your Vehicle Permit $14.00

Thanks, I just did a copy/paste from their website. They also give you a loaner set for free while your new personalized ones are being made.
If they get stolen by someone who wants a workshop/shed souvenir, I wonder if insurance covers the replacement.

never thought of that Wilf, inmates could cut them up and make shivs out them, cause a riot, harm the guards, and breakout. i would feel guilty if that happened with my plates

In a way, I don't have a problem with the increase. It's a pure luxury item, so let them charge whatever people will pay. Although I have to say, I was kinda thinking about getting some personalized plates but at $300 I'm not any longer (I probably couldn't get what I wanted anyhow).

If you mean some wording not allowed - I understand.
But keep in mind - you can tell online if what you want is still available.
