Hazardous Material - Border Crossing
We want to go to St. Thomas this spring to the drag strip. I didn't think too much about it but I run methanol with the super charger and would like to bring about a gallon with me.
We'll probably do the track and then head to Toronto for the rest of the weekend before heading home.
Anyone know the rules for transporting small amounts of what I assume the Canadian government would call a hazardous material? There is the BIS hotline but its automated.

To avoid the hassle, it might be better to source locally.

Methanol probably falls under the Dangerous Good Section.
Will U.S Customs even let you export to Canada?

i would not sweat it. If anything I would put it in a red gas can and keep it in your trunk. No different than carrying some gas. You have it in your car tank anyway, so if you don't make a big deal it won't be. The worst thing that can happen is they will take it. As a back up maybe someone from South Western Ontario can chime in and let OP know where to get some locally

US customs does not check when you leave, it is all up to the agents on the other side, same is true re-entering the US.
The only issue with sourcing it locally is if I leave the house full I figure 6 runs will drain it. I only need 1.5 gallons to refill and its sold in 5 gallon containers. I use a 5 gallon container over 15 tanks of gas on average so will have lots of extra meth.
We are going to Montreal for F1 and I want to take the C7 to that too so I need to bring more.
I put it in MSR fuel bottles when we travel, same you'd use on a bike.

Today I would not. Because the second question after what's in the gas can if they are smart is do you have it in the car which I do.
It's in the windshield washer reservoir.

Why don't you contact St. Thomas Dragway directly and ask your question. Fuel cars have been coming from the US since the early sixties so I am pretty sure they will know.
Other option is contacting the East London Timing Association in London, Ontario and ask the question. Lots of knowledge there.

the SC guys I know tell me it's just the same methyl hydrate you can buy at any Crappy Tire or similar type place by the liter... I've watched a buddy add some to his snow meth tank before as well.... shouldn't be an issue, nor a mystery?

Methanol, methyl hydrate, methyl alcohol, wood naphtha, wood alcohol and carbinol are all names for the same chemical compound.
If you are worried about bringing your own, methyl hydrate is readily available at most Canadian hardware and building stores:

Would Isopropyl (sp?) alcohol work?
Iso is rubbing alcohol.

I was told that mythel would keep the water from freezing and Iso would mix with water and burn it (slight backfire from water hitting the cylinder), but no scientific facts to back it up

So for even more unless info, when I couldn't get race gas that I would add methyl hydrate to in the winter for an event in Quebec to prevent freezing up we'd use 110 octane aviation fuel which contains antifreeze .... Apparently 105 doesn't as the planes that use 105 don't go high enough to need 110 with anti freeze ...
