I've never used anything but water and a soft sponge or microfiber towel. Had my C5 for five years (and 45k miles). A friend, knowledgeable in all things Corvette suggested the miracle cleaner! He hadn't found a cleaner that didn't (in his opinion) eventually muck up the top with lasting residue.
I admit this cleaner may work only on black, and not be sufficient for lighter tops.
Here is my C5 top, five years old, a few days before I sold it.
Haven't tried anything else, so just my two cents!

Me too, I'm afraid...

I pretty much agree with WMark on this except the only thing I've EVER USED was water from the hose. I never soap up the top when I'm washing the car, and all I do is hose it off using a hose nozzle purchased from sears and after I soap the entire car off, all I do is rinse the entire car starting with the convertible top first and drying the top off with specific towels I have just for the top as there is always so many beads of water collectioning on the top. Thats it! Hose it with the car, rinse it with the car, and dry it off using specific towels for the top only. AND AFTER 2 AND 1/2 YRS & 5,000 MILES LATER, IT LOOKS AS NEW AS THE FIRST YEAR WHEN I GOT THE CAR. NO SOAP, NO DETERGENTS, NO SPECIAL CLEANERS, NO NOTHING.
GOOD LUCK, TAKE CARE.

I have not used any cleaners yet either. The water still beads. I do not soap the top when washing or use towels to dry.
I use the leaf blower to dry the car. It keeps the fuzz from towels off the top.

I do use a mild car wash soap on the top every second or third time I wash the rest of the car . . . my beige top does need a little cleaning once in a while and this seems to do the trick. No dressings, chemicals or "special products" of any kind. Works for me.

for my first application, the water was still beading quite nicely 18 months after I had applied it.
So yes, - reapply the cleaner, thoroughly let dry (4 hours, or even overnight is a great idea), then apply the protectant. and if you do this once a year, you'll be in great shape.
in between times, I'll rarely scrub with a soft brush and car soap, if there is a birdbomb or something on the roof, but mostly all I do is NO WASH, just use a lint remover (get them for a buck at the supermarket) to remove any dirt or debris.
