how to clean rusted? brake rotors
I was washing the car yesterday and I noticed that my rotors were a dirtish orange color, so I am guessing that it is rust?
How might I clean my rotors?
Thanks,

If it's what I think it is, then it's a common side effect from washing cars. The rust will disappear the first time you hit the brakes while driving... the pads will scrape it all right off. If you have rust elsewhere, however... that trick won't help those areas.

the rust on rotors is the metal from brake pads and exposed from rotors coming in contact with water or certain acids in wheel cleaners. A quick drive and a couple of braking applications and its gone again.

Go for a short ride and the orange color on the rotor surface should disappear.

what about the lower part of the rotor that you see?....the part that does not come in contact with the pads? Ive got cross drilled and the power part is starting to show its age.

cross drilled rotors are often zinc coated so the area not rubbed by the brake pad (swept area) does not discolor. Unfortunately any number of harsh wheel cleaners will etch and damage them. I have seen a couple companies that sell painted or chrome rotor hubs which will cover the center but a small area still might look marred.

I offer a service to address the issue for drilled and slotted rotors that requires sanding each slot and hole with a dremel then using a high-temp clear coat when finished. the clear coat is applied by brush and the surface of the rotor is finely sanded to remove excess clear coat so it does not come in contact with the brake pad, therefore leaving any and all high-temp clear coat in the slots or drilled holes.
$30.00/Rotor off the car, can just be shipped to me and returned a few days later.
