I want to get some to DIY my wheels. My plan at first as a proof of concept is to do half a wheel to see if it improves the cleaning.

It has been my experience that it will certainly improve wheel cleaning. I have been using Artdeshine ( https://www.artdeshine.com/shop) I don't see the one I used but it was a premixed graphene product. The finish is very very slick.

No need to do half a wheel to check for proof of a coatings' effectiveness at making cleaning easier. It is something that has been proven long ago, which is why so may people do it. Coatings help keep paint, glass, plastic trim, and really any other hard surface stay cleaner. While any coating meant for paint will work on wheels, there are dedicated coatings with a higher solids content meant for the high temperatures of wheels and calipers. My wheels and calipers are coated with Gyeon "Quartz Rim Coating", and for maintaining them after washes, I give them a boost with a few sprays of Nanoskin "Super Charger", which is a spray-on and rinse-off SiO2 sealant and coating topper. It helps extend the wheel coating's life, and acts as a sacrificial layer. Been working great.
My C5Z has a Wilwood brake kit on it, and excessive brake dust is a regular thing. Because the wheels are coated, washing the wheels is a piece of cake. I use the same gentle soap as I use on my paint. That is all that is needed for cleaning.
