I need a lightweight, handheld and portable vacuum cleaner for my car, to be able to quickly vacuum it, for example if I go for a ride or to a car show etc. I have a dog, so I need it to be able to pick up dog hair. Also it is good if I can plug it into a cigarette lighter

Two sites that I have looked at are www.consumerreports.org/cro/vacuum-cleaners.htm and www.vacuumtop.com. They both say that Black & Decker BDH2000PL, Eureka EasyClean and Bissell Cleanview are great. Anyone tried one of these and have any opinions? Any other recommendations and tips on where to buy are appreciated.

I actually had the predecessor to that Black & Decker, the 12V model. New, it worked great. After two years the battery was significantly reduced along with sucking power. I would imagine the newer Li-Ion battery model will have better longevity. For anything less than $60 I would give it a try.

For a non portable unit, you cannot beat the Sears shop vac, the large one, been using them for over 30 years, used them in my detailing business and have had one in my garage all the time; powerful, efficient and run forever. They can usually be bought for under or right at $100.

My wife bought a Bissell Cleanview after seeing one at a friend's house. My old Dustbuster died and so did my corded Red Devil, so I needed a replacement. The Bissell works quite well, has several attachments, a removable hose, and is very light weight. I don't know if they make a cordless one if you are interested in that.

I don't know of any battery operated vacuums ... but here is another option that plugs into the lighter port in most cars. It works well enough for light and normal vacuuming needs.

Also if you have a dog youll need a lint roller . Dog hairs have a way of weaving themselves into the rug

Shark Rocket use the hand held section ( motor ) with the handheld power head attachment. Works great I use it all the time .Sucks up Golden Retriever hair I my truck with no problem . NO cigarette plug, But you will have a back up for house with normal vacuum attachments.Dave

The suction power is very decent by 12v standards, and I did manage to suck up all dust and beach sand grains from my carpet mats. You get four attachments with it (more than you'll ever need), the flat carpet brush, the thin nozzle extension for tight cracks, a brush with 1/2 inch long thick bristles (this is the one I used) and an extension hose - which I didn't use.

I could clean the mats and the roof with ease and, also suck the bits out of cubby holes and boot space. I kept the car idling all the time I was using the vacuum. The wire is long enough to reach all corners and boot of my Swift hatchback. I used it continuously for up to 15 mins and it didn't heat up.

The dust collecting mechanism is too good. It contains a HEPA filter and there is a flap that prevents the dust from coming out when you are using the vacuum. The dust collector is transparent so you can see how much is accumulated. You basically remove the front end transparent cover and empty the collected dust. The HEPA filter could be cleaned by gently tapping in on the wall or use pressurized air if you have access to it. The filter is similar to the paper fiber like filter used for car AC blower.

I use a vac n' blow at home but if I wanted a vacuum to use remotely I would bring our cordless dyson. They are really, really, really good vacuums.
