Here's some good info on machine polishing, however on older paint I would go with the least aggressive pad and polish........

Which orbital ??? If its a Porter Cable, or equivalent, there are lots and lots of new accessories and polishes to help.

You may also want to consider Mike Phillips book or dvd. He also posts on our forum daily at www.autogeekonline.net . There are few more respected than him in the detailing community. He also offers training courses if you are in the South Florida area.

The Porter Cable works extremely well with a flexible 5 inch backing plate and 5.5 inch pads. You want to use some pressure, but not enough to stop the heading from moving. Some suggest making a black line of the backing plate, to help measure it moving.

I personally find the Lake Country Hydro-tech pads work extremely well, and best of all there is only -3- abrasive designs. Not a lot of guess work needed.
