Are HIDs really illegal??
Hey fam. So my C5Z just failed inspection because of the HIDs... I've had HIDs on every single car I've owned (1st gen CL, 300ZX, S2000, C6 Vette) and never had a problem with inspection. I can't just put my halogen bulbs back in because I had to modify the wiring... Is this a new law? Or was the inspecter just having a bad day or something and decided to fail me?

I'm surprised no one else commented ... Google tells me that HIDs can be illegal, with some exceptions. It depends on the light spectrum (yellow or white are okay, blue is not). It depends on your state, on your lenses ...
Overall, I gather that yes, they are illegal for the most part. Illegal in Texas, anyway.

I believe it depends on how bright they are.
Lights can't exceed a certain brightness.

I believe a year ago Texas was going to ban them unless they were OEM. The problem in a lot of cases is that people will install them in non-projector housings. On HID's the top half of the beam is "clipped" to prvent light from scattering everywhere and blinding oncoming traffic. My last car has projector halogens' and I was able to fit the HID's in properly.
I believe you will need to convert back or try and get a privater inspection to pass them if your state allows

To my knowledge there are very specific laws in the use of HID lighting outside of an original OEM system. The challenges are numerous and why most aftermarket systems are marked for show or off-road use only. As I remember it has a lot to do with blinding other drivers and the lack of cutoffs.
