Zaino and California Car Duster Don't Mix!?
Anybody else had this result? Since the 2nd coat of Zaino, the Cal. Duster seems to leave strange "oily" type smears on the finish. Of coarse my C5 is black and ANYTHING shows on that.......but the duster did fine before and after the first coat......I think it has to do with the oil they treat the duster with.

The streaking is coming from the oil/wax on the tip of the duster. If you prepare the duster by wraping it in paper towels or leaving it sit on newspapers for a few days, the streaking should go away. This was also brought up on a recent thread. You can check it out here: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=558283

The Dusters are coated with a paraffin wax from the manufacturer. Those streaks really are not going to hurt anything, they're just annoying to look at - especially on a black car. The streaking is not Zaino-specific, it can happen to a waxed surface as well.
Wrap the duster in newspaper and allow it to sit for a few days; the newspaper tends to draw out the excess wax.
The more you use the duster, the less you should see the streaks. In the meantime, you can use a quick detail spray to rid the finish of them.

OK.....appreciate the info guys.....and you are right.....the detail spray took care of the streaks right away. I just realized another point as well....the streaking started as the weather got warmer....that would have an effect on the parrafin on the duster. :grouphug:

I've had no problems. You need to lay your duster on paper towels for a few days. Good luck. This one of the reasons I'll never own a Black car again!!!

On thing that I have found is that if the car is hot from sitting out in the sun the duster will tend to leave streaks especially a new duster. Remember your black car is going to be a lot hotter than a lighter colored one.

I have been using the dusters for many years, I always due the newspaper sit on trick for several days and usually only experience a little streaking when I use the duster the first few times. As soon as the duster starts changing color from use and dust pick up, the streaking seems to stop for me.
I noticed just recently in my area the price has dropped in half for the Original California Car Duster. They used to be $19.95 for years and are now
$9.95 at Pep Boys and Target. They used to come with a hardwood handle and of course are now plastic.
I agree it is best to use the duster on as cool a paint job as possible. I also agree with you guys and use quick detailer and a micro-fiber cloth after dusting the car.

I got my duster 3-4 years ago. Used in on a blk Pontiac GTP and hated it. It streaked something terrible. I put it on a shelf in the garage and was on the verge of throwing it away. When I got my blk Vette, I pulled it out and tried it. It works beautifully. I love it now! I think it had time to dry out. :) :) :)

Did you follow the instructions and place the duster on a newspaper over night? Those streaks are from the wax impregnated in the duster. My Cali Duster and Zaino work in perfect harmony. I have gone 3 weeks w/o washing mar car because I dust it off everyday and apply a little Z6. And mine is a daily driver.

Re: Zaino and California Car Duster Don't Mix!? (AFVETTE)
It may depend on the specific duster. I had one wrapped (and rewrapped in fresh newspaper when it got soaked) for almost a year, and it still soaked the newsprint and streaked the car. I also didn't feel comfortable exerting the pressure necessary to get the dust entirely off of the car, so I gave up. I use one on the wheels, though.

Re: Zaino and California Car Duster Don't Mix!? (rwd)
rwd, yeah, it took a while for the streaks to go away for me as well. Mine is a few years old now and has turned completely black and I still get some streaking from time to time.
Also, keep in mind that if any pressure is necessary to get the dust off, then it's beyond the CCD. It's time for a wash. Anything that won't glide right off with the lightest amount of pressure (the weight of the strands only) should not be removed with the CCD.

I've been using the CA duster for years on various color cars (Red '98; Black '01 Z06; '02 Pewter) with absolutely no problems. Works beautifully. "Your mileage may vary."

Follow the Cali Duster instructions, then Z6 the car, only takes a few minutes, looks great and better than rewashing every time.
