How to treat Road Rash around the fenders of a C5
I have a Torch Red C5 that is starting to show the effects of being driven on gritty roads. Behind each wheel the finish is finely pitted and the wax I am using goes into the pits making them more visible. Is there some way short of repainting the area to reduce this affect?

Depending on how bad they are, you might be able to "blow in" some clearcoat to make the repair. Most pits and chips are too deep to be buffed out, so I would suggest going to a reputable Corvette or body shop to get an opionion on this, otherwise you might want to invest in Cleartastic or another chip prevention material.

Cleartastic would be my choice also. You will probably need to repaint the lip first, or strip it prior to the cleartastic install.

ClearTastic doesn't cover the area where I have the most damage. I have mud guards on the car and they protected the very bottom of the fenders but the damage goes almost to the top of the wheel opening. It looks like the clearcoat is chipped with multiple little pin ****** but nothing has gone through to the primer.

I happen to have a picture off another car showing the type of paint damage. Since I have two cars with the same problem any suggestions on how to reduce the sandblast effect without repainting would be welcome.

I have the same thing on my Silver 98. I was able to remove some of the smaller pits by using 3M SSR (swirl-and-scratch remover) with an orbital buffer. It took 4 or 5 applications, each slightly more agressive. The larger ones were not getting any better, so I live with them.
The odd thing is the worst damage is in FRONT of the rear wheels!

I have the same problem with my Black 99. What you may want to try is to contact a local highline auto dealer (BMW / Lexus / Mercedes) and find out who they use for paint chip repair.
After they touch up the fenders you can use one of the products from Cleartastic or 3M to prevent further damage.
You could also try any of the mud flaps, but I just can't see myself putting flaps on the Vette.
Good Luck
