Oil weight question

Nando,
In the Fall and winter I ran 5W-30 for cold startups etc... and in the spring and summer when I was tracking I was running 15W-50. A bit thicker for more protection and can withstand higher temps than the stock 5W-30.

Why would you want to run a straight 50 weight oil? That stuff is like honey when cold, and it's not going to be any better than a 15w-50 when hot. Don't believe how stiff that stuff is when cold? Go to an airport and get someone to let you pull the prop through on the first start of the day; once with an engine with straight weight oil, then once with a multi-weight oil.
Man, if startup has the most wear with contemporary oils, startup with glue like that has to be 10 times worse.
Unless you're going to preheat the oil, go with a multi weight.
Oil's come a long way since the straight weight days.
Have a good one,
Mike

When I had my T1 car all the other T1 guys were running 15W-50 for the reason that it can withstand higher temps and protects better at the high temps, bur for our cold winters here in PA, make sure you put the 5W-30 back in as the 15W-50 is like sludge at a cold startup in single and teen digits

Fernando,
After talking to a Mobil 1 factory representative at last year's Mid America Motorworks FunFest I have changed to Mobil 1 0W40 oil for year-round (April to early November) street and track use.
