How do I check a tie rod end?
how do I check a tie rod end for wear? Are there particular symptoms?
(I'm trying to diagnose what feels like excessive knockback although I'm not certain that's what's happening...
thanks,
Jon

JUst check for play. There should be near none. Get some VBP ends and then wrap them and shield them if you have LG spindle ducts.

I have a picture some where but it just like putting a bandage parallel over the end of your finger. Then safety wire or wire ties wire ties around or perpendicular to your finger.

Imagine your fist is the tie-rod end and your forearm the tie rod.
Now you have a length of wrap about as wide as your fist.
Lay your fist down so that it is midway along the length of wrap, then fold the wrap back over. So now you have the wrap completely covering your knuckles (the tie-rod end by the rotor) and a layer on each side of your forearm.
Zip-tie the wrap at your wrist (the other side of the tie-rod end from the rotor). Then fold the loose ends over the zip tie (toward the rotor) and ziptie again (still on the other side of the rod end from the rotor).
This works great. Stays on and DO NOT MELT.

zip ties here too - where they are, they don't get hot enough to worry about. I use some header wrap around the base of the lower control ball joint also - just wrap it around, zip-tie the ends together and tuck out of the way.

not hot enough to melt they are back a bit. I do put the safety wire also. Small zip tie holds it till I wire it and they have been on many track miles.

I used 1 inch Thermo Tek exhaust wrap. It covers the tie rod boots perfectly. Just wrapped it around the boot and tied a knot in it on the side opposite the rotor and then duct taped the ends of the knot to the tie rod. Quick and easy.
