Default Thinking about tracking my ZR-1...

Well, since I sold my pristine '02 Z06 to pursue finding a dedicated track car, I'm currently without any C5 to take to the BMWCCA HPDE next weekend. I'm thinking I might take my also-pristine 1990 ZR-1 out just this once to have a little track fun with it.

I'm planning on checking the brake pads, but probably not buying any more aggressive ones. Figure I'll flush the fluid with Motul. Will put on some of my C5 wheels with slicks. Cover the nose with some roll-on/hose-off paint protection.

You guys have any other thoughts or suggestions? I don't plan on flogging the hell out of it-- just having some fun. Still, I want to have AS MUCH FUN as I can while still keeping the 16K-mile car in great shape.

Thanx,
Fred

Check with forum member GTB/ZR-1. He has one, and he can answer your questions.

Thanks for the suggestion. I should point out, too, that I'm not so much asking purely about the ZR-1 as I am about things to consider when tracking a C4 vs. a C5. I'm familiar with C5 items (from tracking them), not as much with C4s.

The Z is heavy and your brakes will get hot. Also the C5 has the cooling ducts the Z doesn't. Be ready to loose the brakes if you're running hard for 20 min. or so. The Motul will definately help. If the brakes get hot enough, you're likely to melt the tie rod boots. Which gets nasty, but you can replace those later.

Other than that, should be fun. The Z has great power as long as you keep the RPMs up.

Have you ever put the c5 wheel/tires on it before? I bet it looks funny, but it should work fine.

keep it pristine. I did a few laps in my GS when my car blew up. I did 4-5 laps and pulled off. Had some new chips and it was not what I was used to in the brake department so I knew I would get in trouble. I pulled off the track and was glad I did. Go to the track and watch and drive home in your car unmarred.

Nah, that's where this comes in:

Cover the nose with some roll-on/hose-off paint protection.

I have not before. Jeff (Jeffvette) tells me that it'll work, but the rears will be tucked inside the wheel well a bit. We'll see...

94ZR1#444 tracks his all the time. He is at VIR with past 3 days with a PCA group. Car wares like iron.

We talked to a guy who was running the One Lap. He said he had 196K miles on his ZR1 and tracks it all the time.
