C4 L98 Oil Filter Adapter: One That Retains Bypass and Cohabitates with OEM Cooler
Is there an oil filter adapter for the L98 that permits the bypass and
OEM cooler (ok, heat exchanger) to be retained when plumbing for
coolers or an accumulator like the Accusump? I want the bypass
because mine is a dual purpose car and the climate gets cold here.
I have a Moroso 23690 which is similar to the Canton 22-550. These
require removal of the OEM component that houses the bypass.
I also have a Canton 22-566 Universal Sandwich - this DOES NOT FIT
an SBC because it is for a 2-5/8" o-ring (too small) but the
configuration would permit the retention of the stock bypass valve.
Thanks,
Ken R.

I plumbed my accusump into the block right above the oil filter. 1/4 npt fitting there that works well for the accusump. The stock cooler/heatxchanger works fine in my car.

drawbacks on two counts for me.
While I'd be comfortable with 1/4 NPT for prelube, I'd prefer to stick
with 1/2" for oil pressure compensation purposes - the main reason I'm
adding this plumbing. Which role does your accumulator fulfill primarily?
Also, if it is the same one I have in mind, this boss is currently home to
the OEM temperature sender - nothing I couldn't address with a Tee
fitting, though.

temperature and then switch to a different position? I'd appreciate
any images and info you'd care to send to slalom4me@slalom4me.com.
My interest in a by-pass is to have a margin of safety in the event
that cold oil or (unlikely) a plugged filter leads to pressures high
enough to split the canister.
Thank you both again for the replies.

Ken,
My car is a street car-when not racing I leave the cooler bypassed. When at the track I use the oil cooler. Actually have not been to the track with the bypass yet. Will be at Pocono 6/29 (w/EMRA).

P.S. With this post I will try to include photo. If not I will email.

Ahh, I understand.
I was inadvertently unclear about the bypass I was referring
to.
What I mean is the bypass in the factory casting that fits up in
the oil filter mounting boss on the block. There is a metal disk
in a hole behind a spring. If oil pressure exceeds the capacity
of the spring, the disk moves, allowing oil to bypass the filter.
This is a pressure release device intended to prevent blowing
a filter seal or even splitting the filter.
To install the Moroso/Canton adapter for a cooler/accumulator,
the factory casting is removed from the block. No more bypass.
Thank you for the pictures of the ball valves you have set up for
routing oil either to or around the oil cooler as desired. You are
using an external cooler and these line are for the oil, not the
coolant, correct? I am still using the factory heat exchanger
that mounts between the filter and the block on my C4.
Item #14 below.
Not sure if you are interested, but I used a MOCAL thermostat
on another car. It is mounted on the side of the cooler housing
here - left of the alt bracket and directly above the rad cap.
Pegasus Auto Racing carries them in different sizes and styles.
I have one caution about the MOCAL thermostat and their temp
sensor adapter, which is based on the same casting (up beside the
Accusump. This is that one of mine suffered from casting porosity.
After we drilled and welded the offending location, it worked like a
champ.
