Default ? on Insatlling R-D cross frame brace

I finally got around to installing my r-d cross frame brace. Front section is straightforward and no issues. The rear section is giving me fits. Per the instructions, drill a hole useing a 17/64 drill bit. Didn't have one so
went with 15/64 and reamed it some. Now the dang nutsert seems to spin instead of biting into the hole. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you receive spare Nutserts with the Cross-Frame?

The need here is to somehow restore an interference fit.
It only needs to be sufficient to hold until the Nutsert shell
begins to expand.

I've not had to deal with this but have some ideas.

In order from simple to somewhat less simple.
  • Gently tap on the shoulder to 'oval' the
    Nutsert.
  • Use a centre punch and tap around the
ID of the end with the shoulder.
  • Use the centre punch and tap around the
dia of the hole in the frame.
  • Use a welder to place one to three tack
welds around the Nutsert shoulder - then
file matching openings in the frame hole.

Check back here before you start to see whether someone
who has actually had to solve this issue comments.

One of mine slipped a few degrees but then held. The rest
were a snug fit, as were some other Nutserts I installed
on a couple of different occasions.

Oh yes I will check up on this. After the difficulty I had with the first
nutsert I now hesitate doing the others.

It is just a hiccup, don't let it get to you.

I do not know why I didn't think of this sooner
but maybe try it first, before the earlier ideas.

Take a bolt with the correct thread and long enough
to have a nut on it when the bolt is fully engaged
in the nutsert. Put the nut on the bolt, thread the
bolt into the Nutsert, place the whole deal into the
hole, apply a wrench to the nut and a socket to the
bolt head and tighten until the Nutsert just starts to
lock into place.

Do not tighten too much - you want to do the full
tightening with the bolts passing through the Cross-Frame
so that the Nutserts line up best with the C-F.

Think of the Nutsert as a rivet. The nut and bolt
technique is just a means of starting the riveting process.

UPDATE-finally finished the install. Needed a 17/32 drill bit. Had some difficulty with the nutserts for some reason but was helped via PM's
from Slalom4me-thanks! Now that the frame is in,it made a difference for sure. Feels more responsive on turns than before and the ride quality is even improved. Mine has Z51 suspension and it seems like it is smoothed out!

Good work.

Was there any trick to keep the Nutsert from spinning or was
it just a matter of using a nut and bolt, holding the bolt and
turning the nut up against the Nutsert to expand the shell into
the hole like a rivet?

I did use the nut and bolt deal for the install.
