Team Itchy ***** Needs Help on Setup
Hello my fellow corvetters,
My name is David Lehman, founder of Itchy ***** Racing.......
--------------------------------
Anyway---here is my problem.
I am running in ASP at nationals in Topeka at HPT, and at the pro-solo also.
Currently I run 285/30/18, front----And 315/35/18 rear---on 710's.
Car runs ok as I have just about all the weight I can get out of the car, and power is close to 400 rwhp (394). I run 10.5 front and 11 in the rear.
Was thinking of going to 315/35/17 front on a 11", and sticking with a 315/35/18 rear also on a 11"-----all V710
As my car has the stock C5Z06 suspension, when I removed all the weight, and most of it off the nose, the car rose up a bit in the front. That was one of the reasons I went with a small diameter tire up front like the 285.
Finally 315/17 on 11" front, 315/18 on 11" rear--
DO YOU FOLKS---think that that set up with the 17 front and 18 rear, would be better than:
315/35/17 front (same as above), BUT GOING TO a 335/35/17 in the rear, however both front and rear tires would be on a 11" wheel
Thanks

You have already been told what to do, lower the car first and then put bigger tires on it 2nd and if you want to continue, put some real springs on it and bushings.............stop scratching your gonads and get on it.

Danny,
I think I am going to try the 315/35/17 first on the front, with the 315/35/18.
IMPORTANT--DANNY------I have a couple of extra spring retainer bolts for the front spring---
Do you think I should cut them in half (the rubber part that is) ?

I think that a big mistake that racers make is to forget about a most basic referrence point which is chassis rake. The factory had a specific rake with its chosen wheels and tires. If you change the wheel/tire you may change the rake. Sometimes people change wheel/tire and the effects of the change are attributed to the wheel/tire when they added in the second fator chassis rake and did not know it. So it you change that stuff off stock reset the rake and then the suspension to your baseline race numbers to properly evaluate that one change wheel/tire. If you don't do this systematically you are guessing or relying on the experience of previous racers which may or may not make you faster if the change does not meet your driving style.

David defineatly needs to fix his rake, he pulled all of the wieght off of the car, majoritily in front and the car has a negative rake , even with ridiculously short front tires. Which would in turn make the car push, which I cannot comment on as I have not drove his particular car (anymore than around the block). I know he is lacking mechanical grip and turn in response with his rake issue and short and narrow tires. Most autocrossers with Corvettes in ASP run the 315/17 fronts and 335/17 rears. David , you have seen many examples of what works as far as ride hieght, rake and tire size are concerned. Join the Jones, David , if it works for [I]everyone[I] else it will work for you (probably).
What is the handling deficit that you are encountering ????

The reason I went with the 285 up in front originally is because my plan of the 315/35/18 was way too tall on only a 10.5" rim. I thought the 285 on the front would be light and nimble, which it is. However, like at the Peru Pro, the first right after the straight, the car would understeer into the manuver.
This may sound wacky, but overall the car feels pretty good. Due to the stock shocks and springs, and maybe also that the car rears up a little, it does have a class leading 60 ft time (when that sick GT2 from last year isn't included---rear engined and maybe 477 to 600 hp).
After the end of this season, I may decided to get springs and shocks, but with some other cars, z06's that I have had, I had done some minor suspension mods, and got more messed up, the more I did. So I am going to try a little more, and attempt to band-aid the situation with the 315/35/17 in front. As this tire has a comparable side wall to the rear 18 710 that I run, opposed to the tiny 285/30 sidewall, that I currently run.
Danny----you used to run only a 315 in the back when you were on the Hoosiers, why didn't you run a 335 then ?
What do you think of the A6 vs the 710 ?
Maybe if the front of the car and the rear of the car have similar slip angles on the tires, it might be easier to drive, and have more overall grip. Yes I will be raising the front of the car 4/10th of a inch with the 315---hope it will be ok.
I once tried a 315 on the front when the car was in SS, but a 9 1/2" wheel I thought was too small for the 315, as the car couldn't get back easily from a hard trasitional manuever a la salom. The 11" wheel should respond better.
I know shocks are a black art, and I had no idea what I was doing with my 2810 koni doubles that I sold to the Rabbit doctor from Tennessee.(I would have used his name here but the last time I said hello he referred to me as "lame dick", maybe I deserve that as my "TEAM" name is Itchy ***** (kinda catchy don't ya think---wait I gotta itch.............aaaaahhhhh ok where was I, oh and wait that's right the whole state of Tennessee at that time wanted to kick my ***, oh well all is good now).
And finally, if anyone is reading this, by putting on a front wheel with 8mm more offset than what I was running it should lower my CG, probably not enough to offset the rise from my spring due to the weight removal, but every little bit helps.
And besides, the goofy looking car, the goofy looking guy (me---I have heard it said some people say I remind them of Jerry Lewis, but he was much better looking than me in all honesty), the wacky posts that are usally quite funny, IMHO, and the giant "ITCHY *****" t-shirt that I wear to events just keeps my legend growing.
Danny, you're famous for your driving skills, and your car set-up abilities.
I am famous because most people can't believe that a woman would want to marry me, much less my saint of a wife, who although I reach behind her and grab at her implants at every chance I get, doesn't kick me in the *****, well to be truthful sometimes she tries, but this boy runs a little to fast to be caught by a top heavy chick, that's just 5'2".
Actually kind of sad now, because the wife went away with my daughter to visit her sister in Colorado. If I have to fart, what's the point with nobody in the house to offend and gross out.
Did anybody make it all the way through this post ?

Years ago, when we ran 285/18 fronts and 315/17 rears, here is what worked, and what I did not get to try.
You need to lower the car, but it takes shorter shocks to do this right, as the stock lengths will bottom out. Good koni/penske, with shorter bodies, are the ticket.
285 fronts work pretty well, but you need to slam the nose to the ground to capitilize on the height/size of the front tires. Lower front CG, less weight transfer, more grip etc. You can run the nose at least an inch lower than a car on 315's - that's lowering 1500lbs of mass 1 inch. The tradeoff with 315's up front is more mechanical grip, but a higher front CG, and a bit slower response. A 315 front car will sweeper better.
Need bars to limit roll, I used T1 bars, but fought understeer. I'd go with hotchkis or similar size, they have a better front /rear balance (although softer)
Listen to Danny, fix some of the basic things, I'd do shocks, bars and lower at a minimum.

Dude,
Get your money back. The implants are supposed to go up front, bro.

I've had good luck running the 315/335 combo on 17s. 17x11/17x12.
Keep in mind that when you lower the rear running 17x12s you may have to run a spacer to clear the rear spring.
