Default Tech QUESTION: Power Steering Fluid for Racing?

The problem of having to deal with a power steering aparatus in a race car is new to us. In conjunction with the standard cooler, is there a preferred power steering fluid which performs better under road race conditions?

Any details and/or specs will be greatly appreciated.

I don't have any specs but on my '86 coupe w/ Z51 (no OEM p/s cooler) the fluid would get hot enough that the plastic reservoir would weaken and distort.

Even after adding an OEM cooler from a '91 temps were still high. The p/s pump would sometimes groan driving through the pits after an exceptionally hard session.

I replaced the reservoir with a larger capacity aluminum one and switched to RedLine.

No more groaning from the pump coming back into the pits after a hard run.

The pump needs to be reworked to reduce the capacity.

Hi,

On my 1992 I also had problems. I switched to an underdriven crank pulley and run RedLine fluid-no problem at all for 20 minute sessions.

ATF fluid is the same as PS fluid, just a differnt color additive and Part #

I take a 50 cc suringe ( use to mix gas & oil for 2 stokes) and suck all the old fluid out. Put in new ATF and take if for a drive. I do this3 or 4 times the week before each track weekend.

Another vote for RedLine fluid Changed to that this spring and it has gotten rid of the early morning sluggishness too. Boiling point is 437*F, even better than Royal Purple I believe.

I'm not sure if the factory PS cooler (that only came on Z51 cars) is really that good to do an effective job of cooling the fluid for track use. I would recommend installing a 2 or 4-pass filter in place fo the Z51 cooler. IIRC, Flex-a-Lite makes a specific PS cooler in either size. It comes in either A/N fittings or barbed.

Red Line Synthetic PS fluid is a good PS fluid as it wil handle temps better and not foam.

I would also relocate the plastic reservoir away from the motor to keep heat down as long as you keep it higher than the pump.
