Default Looking for Helmet Recommendations

I'm looking to spend around $350 on a SA 2005 helmet. Right now my first choice is a bell. Can anyone give me an opinion on your helmet in this price range.
The Ben Roethlisberger theroy of using God's helmet AKA your Skull just wont cut it for me.

There was a very interesting article in one the motorcyling magazines a few months back that actually did G load testing on a wide variety of helmets. Interestingly, the cheaper DOT(non Snell) tranmitted less G's to the skull. The SA standard hetmet is designed to absorb multiple strikes and hence the initial impact transmits more G's to the skull than a SM or a DOT. I will see if I could find a link to that article. It was eye opening.

While that was a great article, the conclusion that the "lesser" rated helmets performed better was true in the most common motorcycle injuries, where the high end helmets seemed to be designed to protect better in accidents that you are mech less likely to experience. But I don't think that it would necessarily hold true for other applications.

What happens in car crashes and motorcycle crashes are two very different types of events. Motorcycle information holds no weight here since we are taliking about helmets for cars. Also note that SA helmets have a fire retardent lining. You cannot go wrong with Bell.

Although I agree that the nature of a motorcycle accident is very different from that of a car, the key point of the article was that the transmission of G loads to your skull was substantially higher in a Snell rated design. The force of impact your head with helmet could encounter striking an interior object during an accident could be substantial and easily comparable to a motorcylist striking a curb or other objects. That part is relevant and comparable in either an SA or MA design. The fire retardent nature of an SA design is of course an advantage. It was a pretty interesting article and reducing the G load to your brain would seem to be the most important characteristic of a helmet.

IF your helmet does not say SNELL SA2000 or SNELL SA2005 it is a moot point. Your helmet MUST have a SNELL sticker to be allowed with all or most car clubs and race orginizations. Car clubs are not going to take the time to debait the arctical in the tech shed.

If the helmet sticker says "Suppasses SNELL rateings" Forget it.

Bell Helmets are excellent choises. a Car or "SA" helmet not a "M" for Motorcycle helmet is what you are looking for.

SA = Special Aplication. Nomex liner and kevlar shell.

I just bought a new SA2005 Bell M2 this spring and I really like it. I think I paid around $325 at a local performance shop(Twin Cities area). The owner of the shop said he sells a lot of M2 helmets, because of the performance for the price.

A lot of people swear by Bell and I agree you can't go wrong with them. But if you have an opportunity check out Bieffe. I run open wheel cars and have been using a bieffe and i found it to be more comfortable and lighter than anything else. Some models (including the one I have) are made out of a carbon/kevlar combo and really feel nice on your squash.

I just purchased a G-Force Hybrid SA2005 for $199 from one of our sponsors. I used it for several hours last weekend, and it was quite comfortable.

The hybrid has a large opening, though it is full-face. That makes it easier to get prescription sunglasses on and off.
