Default What's the best way to deal with pad taper?

After a day of autocross or DE I find my pads tapered to some degree. Up until now I've been running the same pad on the street, and the pad surface trued back up after a few hundred miles.

Now I'm thinking about a set of track only pads. So, what's the best way to deal with pad taper in that situation? I've heard of swapping pads, but which way? Left to right, keeping outer pads outer? Outer to inner, same side. Something else?

TIA, and have a good one,
Mike

Now keep in mind that I don't no diddly.........

I had uneven inside/outside plus a little taper...... so I just swapped inside to outside pads on the same wheel. This got me another track day without any noticable issues

That works well. It is the leading edge that gets the most wear, so by putting the fat side down, you can get more time, just like Howie said.

Don't wait till they are too tapered or you will still get a long pedal.

DH and LG,

Thanks for the replies. That was kinda my thinking, but figured there might be something subtle I was missing. Gotta love the forum!

Have a good one,

Try Wildwood H's.

I bought a set from LG based on someone elses recommendation and they were much better for taper than J's and other pads I've tried.

They still do it but you get more time out of them.

Hmmm...My answer for tapered pads would have been bad calipers. I could be wrong, but I've usually associated more than the usual tapering with calipers that need rebuilding. Any excessive tapering causes a soft initial pedal pressure, which is a bad thing!

You said it in your post though - "More than usual tapering".

There is always some. May depend on caliper flex, rotor design etc. I have the H's and SL6R calipers and still get some, mainly radial (I think because I used fixed-hat napas) and a small amount of leading to trailing edge. I think caliper design minimizes, but it still happens.

The H's are great because they are so thick, but that said you'll have 'em for a while, so even small taper, if you don't rearrange pads on occaision can develop into larger taper that you can feel with your foot.
