Default brake dust crud! What the....

Okay, I've searched care care and the archives but found nothing. Went to clean my wheels after Road Atlanta this weekend and found the brake dust welded to the front wheels. @#&*#! I just spend 3 hrs cleaning a wheel and half. Never had this problem before, I assume it has something to do with the rain at the track and rain on the way home. What do you use to clean and prevent the problem from being so bad. Just a lot of wax?

Mine I clean with WD40, then soap, then wax them.

Exactly what I'm doing, the WD40 is not taking this stuff off very easily.

Armer All aluminum wheel cleaner. Wet the wheels down, spray it on, wipe it around with a wet rag, wash it off.

^ Racing pads and water = horrible

I'll be the sides of your car feel rough too... you'll have to get a clay bar to get it out of the paint.

Sounds like Hawk or PFC pads. Iron filings from rotors and brake pad binder fuse to wheels and body when damp or wet. Check your body work too. The paint probably feels like 1500 grit sandpaper.

Clay bar will take dust off body pretty quickly. On my wheels I used CLR, EZ-Off Oven Cleaner (yellow can), Scotch-brite pads and finally clay bar. Not in any particular order. Clay bar seems least invasive and works well if you take care of it right away.

I don't run Hawk pads anymore. Carbotech for me.

Carbotech's ceramic compounds do have anywhere near the issues that Hawk and PFC, et. al. do. Carbo's dust is non corrosive.

My cast street stock wheels are rediculous, but my polished forged wheels clean right up!

I hate the hawk compounds, but they do work and last. If you tralier your car and can wash it thoroughly before it gets wet and fully dries, the Hawk's are fine, but if they get wet and dry...your in trouble.

I never had this problem with the Wilwoods.

I had similar problems getting my nasty wheels clean after using Hawk plus pads at VIR for a weekend...

I bought some of this stuff called Brown Royal...
http://www.flashwax.com/wheelcleanerpolishers.html

- it worked fantastic for me ... using this wheel cleaner with minimal scrubbing my CCW's look pretty good again. I did have to follow with a light coat of the flash wheel polish to get the polished outers shiny again...worked for me
