ALMS Rookie Question...GT2?
Forgive my ignorance, I'm new to ALMS. I watched my first complete race last night (Tivo)! I enjoyed the story lines ie Enge's issues.
Since the GT1 competition is gone, can the C6R's move to GT2 and compete? I saw a Viper in GT2 at Mid-Ohio, so my assumption of engine restrictions is muddy'ed. With Porsches and Farraris there also, it seems that is the "sell on Monday" competition.
Please shed some some light for me

I think they can but for the moment they do not want to. I think they are expecting competition to return to GT1 and want to stay sharp with the cars they have. I think there is more prestige in GT1 and being able to win that class at Le Mans (and at races like Sebring or Petit Le Mans/Road Atlanta) against Aston Martin is the goal.
Otherwise I agree, the distinctions between GT1 and GT2 aren't obvious to the casual observer. I think GT2 cars are much more production based platforms than GT1 cars.
Also you could say that Porsche and Ferrari might be content with winning their own GT2 class, saying they beat one or the other. Rather than having to say they were beaten by a Corvette. Most of the private teams that run the GT2 cars probably like it this way too.

they would have to run smaller restrictors and less aerodynamic pieces, but there is a formula that can certainly make a Vette legal in GT2. I think it would be great, but can't see GM doing it themselves. Their best bet would be to develop a C6R "spec" car, similar to what Lingenfelter did with the Z06 for the European GT3 series, and sell them with factory tech support. I know it will never happen, but I know that I would be much more likely to get into a serious series again if I could get a car assembled, ready to race (other than setup), and have engineers willing to give feedback. This works for Porsche and now the Viper, and GM could do it better and cheaper imho!

The Viper Competition Coupe isn't FIA/ACO legal, but IMSA might allow it to race in GT2.
Oreca has modified the Viper Competition Coupe to race in the GT2 class of the International GT Open.
