Default G2X Predictive Lap Time (Beta Test)

FYI.

Racepak is looking for owners of G2X who are going to the track soon and would not mind testing some Beta software on predictive lap timing. I wish I could help but I have no upcoming scheduled events.

Tim at Racepak is great to work with on G2X development.

I am willing to participate if he thinks my circumstances can provide
any meaningful feedback. I've posted to his thread and written to
discuss further.

If any other G2X owners here living in warmer climates than mine can
offer their time and insights, then Racepak may soon be in a position
to make PLT available to everyone that wants it.

Thanks for notification about the call for testers.

Heck, I still haven't even installed mine(saw the c5 pic in the manual, but was wondering where the heck a bigger picture was)... it's going to find a nice home right where the radio is currently residing this winter. I bought mine early summer, and the temps are probably going to show highs of mid 70's this winter down here in texas so I'll try and get some playtime early january at the earliest.

Predictive lap timing is an awesome feature for racing, as it makes qualifying very efficient. There are some patents out there on non-GPS based systems, so I hope they aren't stepping on any toes.

I really want one of these systems, and this makes it even more appealing to me.

You've had a G2X for 5+ mo and haven't used it yet? Perhaps consider
spending $15 on a mounting platform. In under an hour, you will be
ready to play today.

My G2X is attached to a Cosco Ambassador Auto Booster Car Seat
(Cosco #22293, Wal-Mart #002653647). (They used to be marketed
through Target but it looks as though W-M may now have an exclusive.)

A photo of this arrangement appears on Racepak's site somewhere.
When Air Ride Technologies employed Boris Said as the hired gun
for a media event covered by Popular Hot Rodding, vehicle dynamics
were recorded by a G2X system mounted on a Cosco booster seat.

Booster seats are approved for use with OEM seat belts, My mounted
G2X passed tech inspection for World of Speed at Bonneville in '06.

My vote is that external mounting of the GPS antenna is unnecessary.
Mine works trouble-free inside the cockpit of a C4 coupe. I have had
the receiver mounted both on the center of the dash and on a camera
mount behind the seats. Velcro with adhesive backing is available at
office supply and hardware stores.

eMail me if you are interested and I'll provide a link to some images.

It's been on loan to a BMW club race friend from day one, and had it not been for this thread, I'd likely forgotten about it till I saw it in person.

When I dump my A/C and radio, I'll just machine some aluminum plate for gauges and a mount for it and hook the ignition and that little coil plug adapter up when the engine is dropped (should be soon for that part).
I've dreamed of putting it smack dab where the middle air vent is in the dash, it'd look so purty right there.

The manuf of the G2x was acquired by MSD, so I think it's legalities are plenty covered, and as for the patent trolls, there are many ways around them.

I was about to ask about the GPS antenna location, since these cars are plastic fantastic to begin with, I personally don't see much interference with the myriad of possible mounts.

Can you expand a bit on these remarks? I don't get out much.

Legalities? I recall that back in '05, the G2X was not on the NASA
approved list. This changed by early '06 (before the deal with MSD,
IIRC) and unless there has been another change, the G2X is allowed
by NASA.

I'm unaware about any patent disagreements - WUWT?

I didn't participate, but posts at the www.g2extreme.com forum
indicate that initial Beta tests of the Predictive Lap Timing upgrade
have been fruitful.

I've got predictive laps on my D/A system and I think that's the best feature one of these can give you in real time. You know pretty quickly whether you have a flyer or not, so you know when to press hard on the pedal or backoff and conserve resources.

Mine does predictive lap timing and works well. After 5 laps it has enough good data that it will display your predicted completed lap time as you pass each marker and it is quite accurate. It retains that track (10 of them) and the data as well so it will come right to life if you return to that track.

I put one in Richard and Norbert’s cars for testing this summer ... it’s finished now and I am building 17 of them. GPS based. It does not have the ability to download a bunch of data later ... real time only.

Here is a link to the manual but it is a ROUGH draft at the moment.http://www.gpxt-data.com/GPXT%20User%20Manual-v2.pdf
