Default Cristiano da Matta eyeing a return to racing

From Paddock Talk Dec 8/07
da Matta was last week spotted at the famous Daytona circuit, where he
wandered the garages of the Grand-Am sports car teams.

He admits that his doctors have told him to delay any plans for a comeback
until 2008, "but I told them that the 2008 season is starting here, now,
in November of 2007," he smiled.

It is suggested that a closed-cockpit racer would be a safer option for
diminutive da Matta, for whom another head injury could have grave
consequences.

But he insists that stock cars are simply "where the growth seems to
be.

"I don't think it's in (US) open wheel racing now. I've been following the
news from my home in Brazil, and it does not look very positive,"
da Matta added.
Positive news for da Matta, but a setback for those of us who abhor
the black hole that NASCAR has become to motorsports in NA.

I hope all his plans come true.

Excellent news on Shorty. I've come to the conclusion that NASCAR isn't a black hole, but more like CCWS/IRL is more like a La Brea tar pit. I'm just thankful I got to see CART in its prime.

Have a good one,
Mike

Abbreviated from Wikipedia
A black hole is a region of space in which the gravitational
field is so powerful that nothing can escape after having fallen
past the event horizon. This theory predicts that when a large
enough amount of mass is present within a sufficiently small region
of space, all paths through space are warped inwards towards the
center of the volume, forcing all matter and radiation to fall inward.
I didn't post to his thread, but the observations by Cobra4B during
the trip home with the Panoz struck a chord
I find that the average person has no clue what road racing is...
Most conversations with people or co-workers go something like this:

"So you race your car?"

"Yes."

"So you drag race.... like in a straight line?"

"I used to, but no... I road race."

"Isn't that illegal? Like Fast and the Furious? You shouldn't do that."

"No... not on the street... road racing with turns on a track."

"Oh... so like NASCAR?"

"No."
Sad, but this seems to be reality. It certainly lends support to the
apparent programming decisions made by SpeedTV (NASCAR, Pinks
& ect.)

Good luck to da Matta in whatever direction he chooses to proceed.

Good for Cristiano! At least he has a legitimate reason to race a closed cockpit car.

I was just discussing racing on a non car/racing board. This is what someone said in response to road racing compared to ovals.

I find road racing very boring. There is no speed. The cars barely break 100mph. I like full out speed, pushing 200mph.

That is interesting since a lot of people attending NASCAR tracks can't see any of that speed. I have seen NASCAR races at Daytona, Pocono and Watkins Glen and the only one where I could really see the cars was the Glen when I walked the course during the race. At Daytona most of the lower seats do not have enough rise from one row to another so the heads of the people to the side and in rows below you block any view of the cars to either side. So what you see is a blur as a car goes by in front of you at 200 mph. On the front stretch the attendees in the lower seats also have to contend with the catch fence which becomes an opaque wall when viewed at an angle. I attended the 24 hour race one year and went into the main grandstands and found that at the correct angle the fence even blocked the headlights from the oncoming cars. Once you get into the higher seats on the front stretch the rise changes considerably and the people sitting in the row in front of the top row (just below the suites) have their shoulders at the height of the toes of the people in the top row. You can get a fantastic view of the whole track from there but when I went to buy 500 tickets from ISC they were sold out but available on the internet for $450/ea. and I won't pay that much for any seat at any type of event. Pocono has the same seat rise problem in about 90% of their seats. The only place you can see the cars on the move is through the tunnel turn about a mile away. I suspect that a lot of the NASCAR tracks suffer from the same problems and that may be one of the factors in why their attendance is starting to fall off.

So if they are looking to see cars moving at speed a road course may be the only place they can actually cars going fast.

Bill
