Anyone Use A Racing Simulator?
On a cold, december night in the Northeast, I was thinking that I'd love to have a race simulator. Anyone here use one? And if so, how close is the feel to a real track?

Over 100 db, shakers and a sub-woofer the size of a hubcap along with an image that's 75" wide. Plenty realistic

I used to use a 65 inch tv with a PS2 and GT4. I had the racing seat and wheel/pedal setup too. Hooked up to a surround sound system it was pretty sweet. My current apartment is way too small for that now though.

yep. Wheel swings out for ingress/egress, and chair tilts too.
That's not me, and no, I never wear more than socks when I 'm on it. The plastic pedals just aren't sensitive enough for any other 'obstruction' or impediment to my tactile sense.

Unbelievable, what's the ballpark price for those setups. Probably about 2 weekends at the track........I'd probably still need a helmet
No real G's etc. but how close to driving lines and brake/throttle use etc.? I understand it does not replace real seat time but do you feel you learn anything that helps on the track?

yep, it's all I can hope for in the winter months. No g's, but the sensation of movement is phenomenal with the faster cars especially. Probably the only place I'll ever get to drive an F1 car too.
As you can see, my set up is very homemade and 'unfinished'. If I ever have the extra room to make a game room like Too Tall Bob, I would love to have a finished set up like that.
42" LCD: visio at Sam's club for about $900
GTPRO steering wheel/pedals set up with feedback: $150
PS2 with GT4: about $150
Racing seat: $150
lumber/hardware, time and know how: let's say $100-200 and a little.

The VGT system gives you tons of feedback. You feel everything from rocks hitting the underside of the car when you go off into the gravel-traps, to rumble-strips, even when other cars bump you. I've had a number of driving instructors use mine and they have all said that it is very realistic. You can even detect understeer chatter from the front tires to oversteer when the rear tires get loose.
It's not a video game, and it really does separate those who can from those who can't!

I have two sims, but the one Virtual-GT that is PC based with the projector in the image above is just north of $20K. The other sim is also a VGT unit but uses a PS2 platform and a monitor was around $15K.
