Default AC Winch?

After seeing the discussion about power req'ts for a winch, I'm thinking why don't I get an AC powered winch? My tow vehicle (toyota tacoma) has an AC plug on the back.

Why not just install a dedicated battery on the trailer and connect the winch leads to it. Get something like an Optima Yellow Top or similar deep-cycle battery. Get one with the highest ratings you can find and install a marine battery box on the trailer for the battery to sit in.

You can use the tow vehicle to re-charge the battery or simply use a small battery charger when you get home.

most winches (that i've found) are 12 volt. but AC powered ones do exist. i already have one in my garage actually.

i figured by getting an AC winch i wouldn't have to bother installing a battery and charging it, etc.

Are you sure the inverter on your truck has enough amperage to run the winch. That would put a big load on the the wiring and the inverter.

i think that's 3.3A. If that's right, it's well under the capacity needed. DC it is.
