Default 1/4 inch spacers for autox - what do you do?

This is for autox application - may be different for u track guys so keep that in mind.

I have it from 2 very reliable sources that:

1) only reason to do this is caliper clearance if you change wheels (calipers must be stock in my class)

2) it's an improvement in handling/turning specifically

I can only do 1/4 inch or less per the rule book. Stock class.

What do u guys think?

You should pay me for my answers----

If you want add 1/4 inch---but only to the front, and I would only do it if it was part of a wheel and not a spacer.

Don't do it in the rear at all, as you DON'T want to go wider, and the car gets slighly more tail happy (yes I know this goes against common sense--but I think offset more out in the rear makes the car looser.

Just my opinions------

You can mail me my $ 20 now.

I've run spacers on the front (I'm thinking 3/8") when I was having some tire rub problems on my vert. I went to longer wheels studs for peace of mind. Spacers never seemed to create any problems, and I'm not a good enough driver to tell any handling difference.

I used to run 1/4 inch spacers all around in my coupe. If you do it replace the studs with longer ones. You can get 4 turns with the stock studs, but you'll be pulling the threads out of the nuts. I used to replace 1 or two lug nuts every race because the threads would pull out and wouldn't torque down.

I'd never use the stock studs again, fwiw.

Now I use rims with the 1/4 inch offset built in. So much better.

Good luck.

My vote is for #2 - changing track width at one end of the vehicle alters
the balance characteristics.

Whether or not the alteration in balance is an improvement depends.

I ran 1/4 " spacers all year no prob on stock C5, changed to C6 with odd wheels and went to 1/2" spacers but then I had to get longer studs, working great. chuck
