USAA told me it was covered by the truck's policy when they are connected.

I too am looking around for trailer insurance. Its not so much the trailer, but what's inside which is far more valuable. A few years ago I was in an accident with my open trailer and the my insurance on the truck covered the trailer, but only up to a couple hundred dollars. It did not cover the damage to the car on the trailer. I've recently purchased an enclosed trailer and I asked my regular insurance, AAA, about it and they only covered up to $800. They asked for an itemized list of everything for further coverage and I have not bothered to go through that.

Liability wise, that is true. But as far as the cost of fixing or replaing the trailer, I think you may find that it isn't covered.

To the original Poster...I have trailer insurance coverage that I bought through my auto policy carrier (State Farm). It only costs me about $40 every 6 months.

I agree with the USAA poster.
I have an open trailer ... my car is covered when it's being trailered.
I have additional insurance for the trailer ... just to cover the cost of the trailer itself.
Note: If one has a track-only car - not street legal or insured for street use ... check with your ins company on what you must do or if you can insure that car in transport.

I was only worried about liability. If my stuff gets broken, I'm just SOL.

I have USAA as well. How about if the empty trailer gets stolen?

You need to get the trailer added to your policy to cover the cost of the trailer - small semi-annual premium.

OK, you guys will not believe this! I called USAA told them my trailer VIN, manufacturer, year etc, and I paid $5k used for it. It took a long time on hold but she said that was because she wanted to confirm the rate with $0 deductible is $3.09 per year for theft of the trailer. I said "do I understand, you are saying 3 bucks a year"? She said "yes, 3 bucks plus nine cents per year". I said, well then, that is a no brainer have a nice day! Thanks for the heads up gents!

I am going to check to make sure, but I think that my homeowner's policy will cover my trailers (4-5, car, utility, etc.).

I am sure that a homeowner's policy includes $xxx, xxx. of property not located at the residence, but not sure about specifics.

I also have a pretty hefty umbrella liability policy to cover damage to other persons or property.

Here is a tip for people in a state that has limited and full tort (Like PA), since some insurers require full tort on a trailer. You may want to have 2 polices: one for car and one for trailer. My trailer is still only about $30/six months. Otherwise, my C6 would need to be full tort, costing way more for both.

Not entirely. You should contact them again. I have my two trailers insured separately through USAA. Coverage is very very cheap.

However... USAA informed me several years ago that they would not insure my Corvette, even for comprehensive because I raced it and thus it wasn't covered in my garage, in my trailer, at the paddock... no where. In general, what is in your trailer must either by covered by its own insurance or your home owner's policy. I was pretty upset with them and sent them a I'm not happy letter - got no response.

I went with what's called a storage, transport, paddock policy from Heacock Classic Collector Car insurance. This covers my Vette wherever it is but on the track.
