Default Air Tools

Just for fun I thought I'd start this thread & ask what tool(s) do you use most, and what neat/unusual tool do you use with your compressor?

Most for me is tire pressure gauge/bleeder, then the 1/2 inch gun for swapping wheels around.

Unusual is a little homemade deal with a rubber tipped air blower and a regulator built in that I use to get the pot out of the brake caliper when I work on calipers.

I'll see if I can do pics of these.

Cheap Harbor Freight gauge w/ bleeder - hard to read!

Good IR tool from Lowes

Home made from parts @ HF

OMG 20lbs, sheesh. Mine is within one lb of my race gauges & I just use it to "top off" before events, so accuracy is not critical. It's a throw away tool.

I have a cordless HF impact that I use the crap out of. It can't quit brake the lugs loose, but a quick twist with a breaker bar get them moving then hit them with the gun.

And I use a cut-off wheel in my die grinder. A lot.

I don't see it on their site currently. They sell out pretty quickly whenever they get them in. But I'm thinking somewhere around $100 with only 1 battery and a charger. It's been a couple of years, and I was changing tires non-stop when my car was still seeing dual street/autox use. Definitely have gotten my money's worth out of it.

I saw some for about $100 (19 volt I believe) a couple of days ago at HF. If you get one of their 15% off coupons that brings it to about $85.

Item like that, if it's gonna get used a lot, I "might" buy the warranty.

Since I picked up the Milwaukee V28 cordless impact I rarely turn on my compressor except for air for the tires...

blower and various cutting utensils (airsaw and cutoff wheels). I prefer my DC impact wrench, so I don't have to drag an airline around.

1. Impact wrench
2. Right angle die grinder - with cutoff disk
3.Air Saw
4.Air ratchet
5.Air hammer

First 3 are musts, IMHO. Air saws are amazingly versatile.

Froggy, That tool should go on ebay. Then get a nice one like this. FYI I sell these!!!
http://www.intercomp-racing.com/Prod...GAUGE__802.cfm

Then you would have a nicer tool that everyone wants to use.

1/2 impact a must
3/8 impact a nice thing (I have a nice cordless one too)
air rachets for a busted knukle
cut off wheels and diegrinder very nice
3/8 drill
1/2 drill
3.5 angle grinder
DA sander
shears
There is a couple more that we have around the shop that come in haddy.

Randy, you need an air saw - you probably have one but don't use it.

Next time you think "cut-off wheel" go get the saw. Fast, easy and smooth. I bought one to mini-tub my car and we've used it countless times since.

I use an IR 2135TiMAX 1/2" impact gun all the time for swapping wheels, changing pads, etc. Cheap campbell-hausfeld rachet for suspension work.

...not an air tool but always finish with a snap-on electronic torque wrench.

Top of my list is a 3/8" butterfly impact. I use it mainly for dis-assembly but if you're careful with it it works great for assembly because it spins so fast. It beats an air ratchet any day.

So my list is
1. butterfly impact
2. die grinder with carbide cutters (2 or 3 different shapes and sizes)
3. wheel cut off die grinder
4. 90 deg. die grinder with surface conditioning pads and sanding disks (paint removal and gasket cleaning)
5. 1/2" impact (cheap Coleman one for wheels and such, big, mean MAC for tough jobs)

Tell more about the butterfly impact. Compare vs the usual 3/8 ratchet most of us use. I am interested.

I've found that I can do 90% of jobs without air tools. I use cordless DeWalt tools just about every day. The most used of these is my 12V 1/4 impact gun followed by my 1/2" 18V impact gun for lug nuts. It's a great thing not having to drag that damn hose all over the shop. The compressor mainly gets used for tires and the cut off wheel.

BTW - I picked up the 18V impact on eBay for $110 brand new.

There are deals out there.
