Best Simulator?

iRacing is the best sim out by far.
Seriously nothing even comes close.
And it will help your on track driving.
They are adding new tracks constantly (which are laser scanned and just like real life down to the bumps), and they just announced that a C6R, and Daytona Prototype will be coming out this year!
You won't get any other tracks with another other game that are even close to real life.
Every other game feels arcade like pretty much.
Check out the Logitech G25, that's the best affordable wheel on the market imo.
Here's my setup.

Unfortunately, my satellite internet is specifically excluded from iRacing, so I am left to my own non-online devices. I was amazed though - Santa picked me up a combination of games called GT Legends/GTR-2 for $10 (the pair of them) and I've been very impressed with the quality of the graphics, and the realism of the driving. I love thrashing my old Alfa Romeo GTA around crazy tracks in Europe and banging fenders with Lotuses, Ferraris, and Mini Coopers! GTR-2 is the same game engine, but newer cars (from 2003-2004 I think) including C5R's, Vipers, etc.
I'm not really a gamer, and don't play a lot of racing games - but these two impressed me - especially for $10!!

You can download a bunch of American tracks to add on both of your games. Laguna, Road Am, Mid Ohio, etc. I've been running Portland Int in GT Legends recently mostly in the Capri RS or C3. I just got GTR Evolution not long ago (about 20.00, well worth it) and it's pretty good. Newer game engine and is nicely done. Gives you the C6 GTS and both C5R & C6R GT1 cars. Been running Laguna here lately in Evo, it's a kick. Just downloaded Miller Motorsports Park but haven't dinked with it yet. But the guys modding the tracks for these games seem to be doing a pretty decent job.

Enjoy Man!!
Dang, checking out the link saw they have VIR, Thunder Hill and Sebring out for GTR2. Guess I'll have to load the game on my rebuilt box & check 'em out now. Good way to waste a windy/rainy/crappy day.

Thanks guys!
Actually the setup was pretty cheap.
-3 screens which were $180 each.
-TH2GO to make it show up as one big screen (which I won) $300
-Logitech G25 race wheel $250
-Decent computer with a video card that can handle it.
And of course the $13 fee of iRacing a month + cars/tracks.
So around 1k for that setup, if you already have a decent computer that will handle it.

The letdown fo rme with iRacing is having to pay for every "update". From my one month test the extra "realism" of iRacing was not worth the money/time commitment need to progress and "qualify" for the ability to then have to pay for the extra trcks and cars.
Great if you ar ea "full time" sim racer, but a little too much petty cash fo rthe occasion sim racer.
I get my fix with rFactor, GTR2, GT Legends - Race07/GTR Evo seemed nice, but after buying them I keep coming back to rFactor and occasionaly GTR2 and GT Legends because of the large number of add-on cars and tracks available. Although this is changing with regard to Race07/GTR Evo.
A couple of close friends of mine started NoGrip a few of years back and is probably one of the better SimRacing forums that caters to the occasional simracer as well as the weekly league junkie.
What makes the purchase of rFactor worth while for an Corvette fan is the C6 Corvette Mod.

As to whether these games are valuable pre-trackday tools? I dont think so - other than helping you get familiar with the physical track layout, I would not place much value in the actual "feel', lap times or strategy you might pickup from the racing the games.. the bottom line is they are a great fun (and chep) way to go racing :P

Tell your friends nogrip is cool! Yeah, I just crank up one of the one's you mentioned once a week or so just for grins. Usually just use my 22" monitor, but sometimes bring home a projector and get a 6-8' screen up on the wall. That's a hoot. I'm running a Logitech MOMO I've had for a long time now. Had to fix the gas pedel but works great. Someone could probably find a used one cheap. Fix is 1/2 hr and 2" of electrical tape.

My vote is for the Force Dynamics 401.
Racin Jason has a nice set-up shown above in post #2.
CF member Too Tall Bob used to have photos of his pair of Virtual GT
simulators as situated in his outstanding racing room. He shared them
in post #44 of the following thread - but they no longer display.
Does anyone play Gran Turismo to practice?

There are several other posts about simulator software and hardwareThis image from the manufacturer gives a good representation

in the thread above that may be of interest to sundiego.

True - but he should be. A HANS device might not be out
of place, either.
