Default Biggest Changes In 2009 Formula One Rules and Aero Design. SHORT VIDEO

Very short but awesome clip on the 2009 Formula One.

Interesting changes on how grip is reduced and how to offset it.

Cool video!

Will be interesting to see how lap times compare this year against previous years.

I heard yesterday that at least 2 people have been killed by the KERS.

Gary,

Was it due to the KERS system having hundreds of volts?

I understand there are supposed to be warning lights to show the KERS status light, color codes and insulated gloves worn, but I guess that only goes so far.

Mike
Well, it is due to the KERS having alot of Joules. Joules are watt-seconds and is the way to compare total energy of a flywheel system versus a capacitor. There are 745 Watts per HP, so if you wanted 100 HP for 2 seconds in a "push to pass" that would be 149,000 Joules.
(745W/HP times 100 HP = 74,500 Watts times 2 seconds or 149,000 Joules.) And since a Watt is a volt-amp, you can do the math for a 100 volts, 12 volts or 1000 volts and it still makes for a deadly load of amps no matter how you do it. And if you did it with a flywheel, and it was damaged at say 100,000 RPM, that would be alot of shrapnel.
By comparison, a AA battery has about 3 Joules so the system above would be like 50,000 AA batteries zapping you at once.

Very cool video! Thanks for posting!

I hope that nobody has been killed by the KERS but it seems like the possibility is definitely there.

The drivers now have to do "the right thing at the right time". What a novel concept.
