Default ZR1's Lap vs. Hans Stuck's BMW lap at the Ring....

Many of y'all might remember the famous video of Hans Stuck driving the BMW M3 GTR around the Ring some years ago. I have that video and thought it'd be interesting to combine the recent ZR1's lap and the BMW's lap into one video.

In the video I started both cars at the same spot on track. I could only use brief clips since the whole video would have been too big to post. You should see the whole thing on DVD with the volume turned up.

Giddy Up, Hans!

Very cool, Jody. That Stuck video never fails to amaze me. The speed he carries through corners just seems unreal. Of course a great racecar and more Ring time than probably anyone else sure help. It'd be interesting to see what he could do in the ZR1 with a few laps practice.

That's no fair Jody. Hans is an old man (my age) whose father used to race Autounion GP cars before the war. He has lotsa talent, but (according to Sam Posey) he has cojones the size of basketballs!!!

Sweet holy mother of cow.

What on earth is the whining noise in that car? Its frequency
matches the car's speed, not the engine revs.

Using the lap timer on the ZR1 as a reference, Hans would have had about a 6:50 couple. At the end of his lap he doesn't take a right to the start finish line so we'll never know for sure. He was at 6:48'ish where the intersection was and it's a about 3 or 4 seconds from there to the S/F line.

If my memory serves me correctly, it reminds me of the Trans Am series and the noise that I heard from Paul Gentilozi & other competitors cars...

Thanks, I was not even paying attention to the ZR1's lap timer...

The straight cut gears in the Jerico-style tranny's that didn't require the clutch between shifts make that noise.

Thanks !

Worth noting
  • Mr Mero encountered no traffic, while Mr Stuck passed at
    least two cars.
  • Mr Mero was carrying several hundred pounds more weight
    [3,325 vs 2,975 (or 2,470 comp version)].
  • Mr Mero was on 'street' tires while, IIRC, Mr Stuck was on
    competition rubber.

Christ, a plain Z06 on race rubber will likely beat a ZR1 on Street Rubber.

Here is a version of Stuck's onboard video with his own comments.

By the way, Stuck's first name is Hans-Joachim. His father Hans was a famous racing driver as well.
