Default Battery voltage poll

This is mainly for dd or driven at least weekly, not on trickle chrg.

I just put in a new Optima (mfg 3/09) and wonder the volts I should see.

This is BEFORE STARTING. Just key on, maybe shut off accessories & cycle the dic to read your volts.

Please add details if you wish, batt mfg, age, how driven, etc.

I was having service col lock & lock was dead - open position.

As soon as I threw in the new batt all was fine on that issue.

I got almost 6 years 30k miles on the gm original batt. It was down to reading 11.6,7,8 ish & still would start the car, but the col lock was dead.

Thanks!

BTW the oem was 36.6 lbs and the Optima red 34.6 digital scale - pretty accurate. I have to be lead acid or I probably would have tried Braille or the other dry cell.

PS there is a hole about the size of the hold down clamp that you need to watch out for, will store sockets, extensions, clamp, small flashlight etc. very well. No I didn't drop ALL that chit down there! Just the clamp.

I think a fully charged battery should read 2.1 volts per cell or 12.6 volts if I remember correctly. Leave the lights on for a few minutes to remove the surface charge and it should read about 12.0

Just went out to the garage and checked. 11.2 volts. Car has been sitting for at least a month without being charged. The column lock motor locked and unlocked when I put keys in ignition and run positions.

Time to throw the charger on it or start driving it again .

I keep mine on a Ctek tender if it is going to sit for more than a week or so.

I just put an optima red top with a 2/09 date in a few weeks ago. I know while driving it varies between 13.6-14.2. I'll check what the volts are w/just key-on and get back to you...

Thanks guys, keep posting. I don't know why I only get 12.0 & that's after a 25 mile drive & shut off for about an hour & then ck the dic b4 start.
