Infineon/Thunderhill Lap Times for C5 Z
I'm considering buying a C5 Z06 in the near future. The performance to price ratio is outstanding on these cars. I plan to use the car for NASA Time Trials.
Currently, I track a 1990 mustang coupe with mostly Maximum Motorsports suspension and a custom built Griggs rearend. I'm in TTS because of the extensive modifications. The car is very quick around the track, a couple of weekends ago I ran multiple low 1:53s at Infineon on Hoosier R6s. I have also run a 2:05 at Thunderhill w/bypass on RA-1s (this should go down by a couple of seconds after my next event with R6s). I know my car has more in it, but not much more. I push it pretty hard.
There was a TTA C5 Z06, which is basically bone stock with R-comps, that ran a high 1:51 at Infineon last time we were there. He was the only guy pushing it, the other Z06, a modified one running in TTS ran something over 2:00. Obviously this guy was not driving the car hard. I'd like to get some more real world info from you guys on lap times for these cars. What are they capable of in stock form with R-comp tires?

I would say stock C5 Z06 with R tires and setup should be able to do a 1:50 or better. Short t-7. My '99 which fits in TTS should be in the 1:45 range on R6. I plan on getting under 1:45 though once most of my tricks are out. Similar Z06 should be a little faster because of hp advantage. My one time at t-hill I ran 2:00 flat going over the top of T-5. Bone stock motor. Passing was ultra restricted and everyone else was slowing me down. I'd say that I can do a low/mid 1:50 with the way the car is now using the bypass that nasa runs. A lot depends on what tires.
TTS mustang should easily break 1:45 at sears.
Corvette is a superior car in every way over any mustang and I've been racing/building them for years. Still have an AI car in my garage that I hope to finish someday if nasa ever gets thier head out of the hole and solidifies the rules.

Impressive times trackboss. 1:45 at sears is really moving, AIX track record territory. Thanks for the data.
A 1:45 would be something to see in a TTS mustang. I don't see it happening but sounds like you've been at this a lot longer than I have. My car is way underpowered for TTS, my 321rwhp/339rwtq, in a 3280 race weight car is not even close to the limit for TTS. The best TTS mustang I've seen so far is a 1:50 at sears, the track record belongs to an EVO that did a 1:46.

FWIW, my #33 car is an AI mustang, but not fully developed to the rules yet. I ran it once at sears and with no prior tuning, setup, practice, etc. I was easily in the 1:48's. That was on a junk yard transission, one dead shock, and then the plug wire came off. Even on seven cylinders I was probably at the 1:50-1:51 mark. In addition, that car had all steel body, was about 5" narrower track than rules allow, and no aero. When it rolls out next I expect to be running easily in the 1:46 range, legally.
TTS allows far more modification than AI so I am sure its just that no one, mustang or otherwise, is driving hard enough or dialing in their equipment.
Can't comment much on the evo, but what I do know is turbo cars can easily hide a bunch of power which will allow for them to be faster than thought. Not like nasa ever truly inspects anything though.

Since you quoted the time, I'm sure you have looked at http://www.nasa-tt.com//Norcal
I was surprised to see a 3rd place time of 2:03 when my stock LS1 coupe
on street tires has been down to 2:00.8. Interesting to see what others
can do and although the Nov. weather was sort of dicey, back in June the
times were a little slower, probably due to a warmer track. Good luck with
your pursuit, it would be good to see a Vette at the top of the timing.

My car is definitely not optimum for TTS. It has a full interior and is completely streetable with street rate springs. The evo running consistent 1:4x is maxed out for HP in TTS. I got into spirited discussion with the national TT director about classing my car. I think it's a bit ridiculous how severely we get penalized for running a torque arm, three different rules apply to it and it's something like a 14pt modification. My car is 2pts out of TTA, so basically it's a bottom of the barrel TTS car.
It's much cheaper to buy a used Z06 and be competitive in TTA than to strip my car, which I don't want to do, put in durable stroker to get the weight/hp ratio correct and upgrade the suspension and chassis further. I love my mustang but I'm pretty much sold on the Z06.

I thought my corvette was TTS until I was told my tire points would be based on the base class tires. That threw me over a few points and rather than changing anything I just gave up. My car is far from what a TTS car could be, but its my street/track car and I could care less at this point. IMO, S should be a totally streetable car, but some of the modifications allowed just don't make sense. Aero for one thing is completely gay on anything but a race car. They should reserve stuff like that for U and R.

I ran a 1:56 at Thunderhill in a TTU car. I was way down on power however my C6 only made about 500hp. Plus the car weighed 3400 easy. The aero and the montser rubber you can use on the corvettes make it a lethal combination.
The wing allows you to go flat out on the back and carry way more speed. The brakes help too.
C5Zs are a great way to go because they're light and have all the potential of any other Corvette. Except maybe the C6Z because it has the aluminum frame.

FWIW, the T1 record at Thunderhill is a few years old and is a 1:58.X I'm not sure what configuration that is - but that was in a Viper. I think a T1 C5 - especially with 2009 rules - will beat that this year.
Stock C5Z on race rubber, 2:00 is a pretty good time at T-Hill (running the bypass) IMHO. Adding aero is a huge help at that track too.

Although that was 2006 in a Viper it was restricted and we ran V700 ECSTAs @ 3600Lb and was only marginally faster 1:57.7 than the time we ran in a C5Z on V700 Victoracers (315 & 275s) 1:58.1 in 2004
With today's tires, 20hp more and 100Lb off the cars and C6 brakes I would expect a 1:55XX is easily within reach for a T1 C5Z

are you in the same run group as that black 666 C2?

I seem to remember that record...

My group had an interesting blend of cars - A 58 Ferrari TR250, a 35 Alfo Tipo, a 57 Monsterati (a wickedly fast car), a 66 Saab 96 and a 53 Fiat 1100. I was the only C1.

No - the C2s ran with a bunch of other mid-60s cars. I'm glad I was in a different group too. The mid-60s cars are pretty fast company compared to my 57 vette. The 666 C2 ran a 2:01 lap on Saturday, for example.

the guy in the 666 vette is slow and blocks bad....he even blocks the leader when hes getting lapped. my father can attest to that
