Default Lug nuts eating my wheels

I am noticing slight deposits of alum alloy on the steel stock lugnuts, not much, but there.

I change wheels like underwear got 5 or 6 sets.

Should I just file off the deposits & not worry about it?

PS I gun them on/off NOT TIGHT and finish with a torque wrench.

Discuss.

Wheels are wear items too, not just if they get bent, but even just used over time. When a car is driven hard the lugnuts will loosen over the course of the day so they must be tq'd before each run. If you don't tq them each time then there is a good chance that by some of the later runs you're getting enough movement to leave a little bit of deposit.

are you using aluminum lug nuts?

get some open ended hardend lug nuts for Napa.

and yes, lug nuts and studs ware out. Change them each winter with new bearings

I was thinking that, but it would change the torque spec? y/n?

You need to make sure that you don't have any buildup of aluminum on the nuts since it will gall the aluminum on the wheel and make things worse. The hardened nuts are best but if you get any buildup of aluminum on a nut you shouldn't reuse it without at least cleaning it off, but really you should chuck it and get another one... Nuts are cheap, wheels are expensive.

Any chance you have the NAPA part number for the lugs? I asked the local store and they said the didn't have them.

I will clean them or toss them, I've got plently. Just was surprised to see it come from oem rims. Mostly speedline, but I did run some oem wagon wheel (rears) on the front to fit some yoko slicks I got.

The wagon wheels don't look as nice as the speedlines.

Do non z06 c5's get speedline wheels, or some other vendor?

BTW for the poster that mentioned that wheels can come loose between runs, I suppose that might happen, but not the cause of this issue, I have often checked torque spec, especially because I use mostly Dot R tires, never had any loosen.

I'm pretty **** about the car being 100% right b4 I run it hard.
