Bob Bondurant's driving school switched to 15-50W for their stock Vettes as they were blowing motors too much with the 10-30W. 10-30W is way to thin for the track when your motor gets real hot so it really depends on how you drive. In Europe the C5 Vettes come with 5-40W, not 10-30W. I am not sure what the C6's come with in Europe.

Thanks for the reply. I ran 15w-50 last year without a problem. I was thinking of the 5w-50 meaning it would have protection on a broader range. I'm a rookie and need all the help I can get

INTERESTING. Should ask my mechanic, it gets hot here in s. florida. Synthetic 5w50 sounds good.

I was questioning using 15w-50 in the past due to cold engine start ups not the 50 at hot track temps. That's why I was thinking that the 5w in 5w-50 would have that covered. Dumb rookie question?

only reason to use M1 5-w50 as M1 15-w50 is hard to find.

a Mobil Oils marketing person mention to me last summer the M1 15-w50 was discontinued and M1 5-w50 replaced it. Take about 12-18 months for store stocks of 15-w50 to bought up

From what I've researched Mobil 1 Gold Cap 15w-50 was discontinued as of May but Mobil 1 Silver Cap 15w-50 is still being made

Same here Donna. But lately all I can find is the 5-w50 at wally world and Autozone.
I have 6 qts of M1 Racing oil 0-w40 but that does not do me much good.

I spoke with Mobil, they stated that 5W-50 is only available thru Porsche dealers and won't be released to stores. Autozone in my neck of the woods doesn't carry it. Is 5-W50 the same as 5W-50?

Wally world and autozone have it here in Raleigh. or at least the two wally worlds I visit and the autozone in town, which my neighbor is a manager at.

the only difference that I noticed was in Feb and Early mach with cold morning temps at the track

I used to run it. It is the oiliest oil I have felt. Must be the extra Zinc or Mb I don't know. It is quite hard to wash off and breaks my skin out. No other oils felt like this or had this effect. My car experience is I had lash caps and valve retainers break while using it, and not with other oils. I don't know why, only stating what happened. So I'm just passing that on, 'cause you asked. I really liked the oil though, just not the temporally related small parts problems. Conclusion: oil is a superstituous kind of thing.

Rather than starting a new thread I will hijack this one

I have a ~500 h.p. 383c.i. LT4, nothing TOO radical. The previous owner used Amsoil 15W 50 Racing oil in it. I still have a few quarts of it left that I bought with the car, but was considering going to Mobil once that is gone and saving a TON of money in the process. Does anybody see any possible issues with doing this switch??

I'll see your superstituous, and raise you one religon. Oil is a religon, and my experience is that very few guys will let the facts get in the way and cause them to change their mind!

Can't personally attest to it. But, my thoughts after having gone up then back down in oil viscosity over the years is to base your viscosity choice on your oil temp and pressure. I've found that in my car with an oil cooler, I got cooler temps when I dropped from AMSOILs 20w50 to their 10w40. I've been experimenting with their new racing 10w30 and my oils temps are even lower (at a race at PIR two weekends ago my oil temp was only 230F at the end of the race). My rough guideline is that if your oil temps are 240-260ish, consider a 10w40, if they are above that consider an xw50 and below that xw30. But, as I said, I've found that oil temps are partially driven by the oil's viscosity, so I'd suggest experimenting.

Another thing to consider is the oils anti-wear additive package. Most off the shelf 30 grade oils, including that recommended for the Corvette, are limited by API SM specs to have a phosphorus limit of 800 ppm. I feel that this rating is demonstrated by the oil's High Temp High Shear ratings. Some examples:
AMSOIL Dominator 15w50 - 5.4
Penzoil Platinum 15w50 - 5.1
Mobil 1 15w50 - 4.5
AMSOIL Premium Performance 10w40 - 4.3
Penzoil Platinum 5w50 - 4.1
Mobil 1 0w40 - 3.7
AMSOIL Dominator 10w30 - 3.6
Penzoil Platinum 10w30 - 3.15
Mobil 1 10w30 - 3.14
Penzoil Platinum 5w30 - 3.1
Mobil 1 5w30 - 3.09

I can't even find a 5w50 listed on Mobil's website, so not sure what its HTHS is, but suspect it'd be below that of the Penzoil Platinum 5w50 based on the other Mobil 1 vs PP ratings. As the AMSOIL Premium Performance 10w40 has a higher HTHS rating that does the PP 5w50, that I why I think I saw my oil temps drop with that oil. Less pumping friction in the motor without sacrificing protection.

As a note, almost none of the oils we are talking about meet your owner's manual requirements for an oil meeting GM Standard 4718M.

As can be seen from the above info, you are giving up about 20% of your High Temp High Shear protection when changing from the AMSOIL 15w50 to the Mobil 1 15w50. As I lost a motor a long time ago before I switched to AMSOIL, I'll always wonder if a few extra bucks on oil might have saved me a ton of cash on the new motor. I'll never know, but as our motors are not exactly inexpensive, for my limited budget, I prefer to ensure I have what I believe is the best protection. That said, the two oils use the same basestock, so it won't hurt anything to mix them.
