The guy in the article welded over a spot he cleaned with brake cleaner. He almost literally died from the heat altered fumes.

In the Navy, they teach anybody who works with Freon that smoking a cigarette around it could result in Phosgene gas inhalation if freon gas entered the cigarette upon taking a drag. Just like the welding in the article, high heat in the cigarette converts the chemicals to Phosgene gas. So I would think working with brake cleaner and smoking could also be bad.

Teflon tape and paste will cause the same problems. I only had one bad experience. I was working at a Job shop building all sorts of stuff. It was like -30 below zero so everything was turned off including the air-circulators. Someone forgot to close the lid on the "acid tank" used for cleaning Alumium. This tank would turn thin AL into nothing in the matter of minutes.
Well the welder closest got it the worst, I was pretty far away, but still throw up a few times during that afternoon. The light not only attacts the bees, and flys, it is like a magnet for fumes. Scary stuff.....
We used MEK for a ton of different material cleaning, and we had a bench just for that. My stupid self, gets a rag wet and cleaned some parts on my bench. When I was done, I put the rag about 5 feet away on the bench. After about a minute of no-stop welding that rag light up like a x-mas tree, just from the light.

WOW!!!!!!!!!! I knew that stuff COULD happen, but that's the first icident I've actually read where it DID happen. My friend who supervises a aircraft shop tells me that the out-of-town safety inspectors are always checking the cabinets for brake cleaner for just this reason. But I think we all still use it.

As someone who has been in the auto industry for YRS. I know exactly what the white smoke smelled like. I havn't had any KNOWN exposure issues yet. The worst time came when I grabbed the wrong can and was using it as a throttle body cleaner. This stuff comes out the back of the car in this white Fog. Bad ****.
