Holy Crap...F1
Masa qualifying gets hit in the head by debris, possibly a spirng. It might have knocked him out for a few seconds, causing him to crash. He was airlifted out...more details to come.

They said it was the "big", downforce spring from the rear of another car. It looked like he may've been temp. knocked out, but then he did lock up the brakes before he hit the tire wall. Sounds like he is going to be just fine though.

Sounds like things are worse than originally reported, but the story says he's "stablized".

I thought the same thing when I saw it 'live.' His arms were limp and he seemed to be both feet in as if his legs were either limp but pressing on both pedals, or stiffened from convulsion (not infrequent with certain types of head trauma) which could result in both feet full tilt on the pedals under them.
Thoughts and prayers out to him, for sure!

BUDAPEST, Hungary - Formula One driver Felipe Massa has undergone “life-threatening” surgery for a fractured skull from a high-speed crash at Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying.
The AEK military hospital said Saturday the 28-year-old Brazilian was in “satisfactory condition” after emergency surgery. The hospital said in a statement the Ferrari driver would be kept in intensive care overnight.
Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni said the driver’s state was “positive.”

It definitely ended up being a lot more serious than what they were discussing right after the accident this morning. Initially they were using the locked up brake scenario as that it wasn't that bad, and that he supposedly had his hand over his head before getting into the safety vehicle.
I agree with the both feet in description.
Look at how torn up his helmet is. Lucky guy, if that was only a few inches over he wouldn't be here.

They use three springs now (not always, but sometimes). Two are for roll control, used on what we'd call the normal dampers. Then with the cantilever suspension setups, they have a setup that compresses a damper/spring combo when both sides of the suspension compress together.
It'll get activated when they go over a bump with both tires, or the aero package adds downforce at speed and compresses the suspension as the chassis loads.

Steve Matchett described it as a 'heave spring', used to prevent heavy bottoming of the suspension under extreme aero loads and bumps.
It's just amazing there is any way that it could become dislodged and fly out of the car at speed...
Maybe they'll show a photo or cutaway of this spring's mounting location in the suspension on tomorrow's broadcast.

ESPN is now reporting that Massa is in 'critical, life-threating condition'...
Certainly sounds like things got much worse after he got to the hospital in Budapest.
On top of all of this, Massa's wife is apparently ~8 months pregnant with their first child. Man, I really hope he recovers...

You can see a good animated video here of where the Heave spring is located and how it operates.

Here's a better video of the accident, in HD.

And here's a closer picture of the damage to Massa's helmet. Graphic warning because he's still wearing it.

Wow, did this take a bad turn . I was busy with yard work and honey do stuff after I made the post. My prayers are for a full, speedy recovery.

I saw this happen as I was working in the garage and didnt think much of it at the time. I really hope for himself and his family that he pulls through. They will be in my prayers.
