Default How do you guys edit race videos?

Somewhat race related.

I took some in car video of a track day this past weekend for the first time on a non tape camera (trying out some "new" technology ). I want to delete the sections of me in the pits in the beginning and end but when I open the .avi file in Windows Movie Maker (only program I have cause it came on the computer) I only have audio and no video. Should it be saved as a different file type or is there a better free program to use?

i've used a few different programs now and so far am liking the newest one I got: Pinnacle Ultimate...after using and playing around with a few different ones, it's easy to navigate and use and has a lot of extra type of utilities in it that I'll never use :o

Is there a free download of it? I dont really want to spend money on video editing software. Im not looking to make a Ken Smith production or anything, just want to delete the boring parts out of the video.

I just use the Windows Movie Maker that came with Microsoft. It seems to work really well for me.

Do you upload .avi files in WMM or do you have to save it under another format? My .avi files will not show the video in WMM it just has audio.

Sounds like a codec problem. Do a google search and do what the nerds tell you to do.

I'm suspect that MM is the problem if you're getting video and no audio - especially since it's an AVI file. FWIW there is new version of MM for free download as part of Windows Live Essentials (http://get.live.com)

I use a mini-DV camera and have no issues at all...just plug and record. MM does have an import feature so you can convert any file you want though.

Thanks. This appears to be a popular Vista issue.

That's what I used to.

Though I need to boot up in Windoze instead of Linux to use it.

I save it as a WMV and upload that to my YouTube account.

Looks like the version of MM on that site won't work with XP or any earlier OS version. Vista only and probably Win7.

Im running 64 bit Vista and the codecs I found are only for 32 bit. I found though that if I change the extension from .avi to .mpeg it works no problem so Ill just do that from now on. Thanks guys.
