Default Will lowered fan settings hurt or help overall airflow/cooling?

I've read that if average speeds are relatively high (typical track day),then additional/earlier fans will hurt radiator airflow not help it. I was considering a 160* thermostat and lowering the fan setting, but what do you guys say?

I can't address the fan settings thing. But I put a 160deg tstat in my car, and I need to yank it out. It just never warms up enough in cool weather (track would be different), and the car won't go into lean cruise mode, and I get ****ty milage.

It has helped my car remain cool. The biggest advantage is slow moving to pit lane and sitting on pit lane waiting for the fun to begin. I have never seen temps over 218. I saw 218 coolant, 290 oil at VIR mid afternoon with temps around 95. I just wish I could get my oil temps under control. Still seeing 290 on hot days with a dewitts integrated oil cooler. I may need to go to a big external cooler because short shifting or slowing down is not an option

I don't think it will make any difference except sitting still. Depending on the year of car, cutting holes in your fan shroud (making more open space) can really help airflow when moving, but then that of course reduces the effectiveness of the fan/shroud when sitting still.

Always trade offs.

If you are looking for better air flow and cooling at the track you can do two things.
One, look at DRM's instructions and cut out the fan shroud as they show for the rad install. The fans will never flow as much air as you can at speed at the track.
Next, a 160* thermostat won't help anything other than causing your car to run too cold at colder temps. The proper solution is a high flow thermostat at 180* or 195*. Evans makes one. A lower thermostat doesn't make a car run cooler unless the temp is too cold to warm the car anyway. Water flow and rad size cool the car. The proper thermostat just regulates the flow of coolant to maintain the temp.

Select Catalog and Thermostat on the left.

I can get there, but I only see what appear to be gen1 tstats. You sure they make a gen3/4 unit?

Now I can't get there.,,,,
Anyway the part number is E3023 for the 180*
Water Pump is EP3913 and you should use the large pulley if you are spending a lot of time at the track near or above 5000 rpm. The sweet spot on the water pump is 4500 5500 rpm.

Where can I find these instructions? I checked the DRM website but didn't see them.

Thanks,
Matt

Stock C5 computer settings disable the fans above 30 mph. Best cooling while slow is to have fan 1 on, fan 2 in high speed mode as it is when the ac is on if you have it. You can run a switch to the relays to manually do this if AC is removed or jump the high speed relay so the fan runs all the time.

Like this?

Jumper installed.

Wire stored in fuse block for use at the track.
